  1. Foster competition instead of creating taxes on Democrats May Promise Broadband for All · · Score: 1

I have mentioned this before, but I prefer the government create a public infastructure (much like public roads) that is turned over to a public corporation and leased to various providers. In the end this would reduce prices for everyone, provide service in remote areas and unbundle services, i.e. you could use vonage without internet access.

I detail it more here: http://michaelsilver.us/?p=1

Taxes aren't the way to do it. Competition is.

  2. A good way to fix this... on Comcast Accused of Blocking VoIP · · Score: 1

Someone mentioned the idea of privatizing the public roads. Why? It's worked as it is and promotes commerce and free enterprise. In fact the public roads have benefited us so much, the wires to our houses should also be public. This would promote compeition among internet carriers and cause a bunch of other services such as VOD and VOIP to florish. It wouldn't prevent others from connecting wires or building wireless networks, but it would ensure competition.

It needs some tweaking, but here is the plan:

The negative impact on the stock can have a profound ripple effect on the company. Shareholders or the board can revolt and shake up management. 6. This pretty much defines Palm on Limitations in Current Breed of Palm Handhelds? · · Score: 2, Insightful

I have been a palm user since the Palm III. They definitely defined the palm top and made it popular (with some help from the Newton, et al).

Now with Sony ditching their palm based products, we see how truly uninnovative Palm is. Sony had some of the best designs, including swivel displays, camera's, keyboards, WiFi, etc. Palm pretty much had the same old design, sometimes adding a feature here or there. After all, there is a palm that has a camera, but only that one unit. Some could play MP3's, but the business ones didn't have stereo sound. Retarded.

Unless palm can innovate, and quickly, the exodus will only continue. With Handspring and Sony gone it's pretty much up to them, and I don't see it happening. Even the owners of Handspring left Palm because they didn't like the direction it was going.

And now we have the Treo, thanks to them. Palm gets a hold of it and can't even put WiFi in it. Is that too much to ask? But to their credit it is probably the most feature rich Palm available.

For my next PDA I am seriously looking at a Dell. Cheap, and just about every feature you could want. VGA display, WiFi, Bluetooth, Compact Flash, etc. And these features are all in the same unit. What could I possibly buy from Palm that has all that? ...Michael...

I agree 100%. I am not sure they would have done any better charging less, but my impression is they locked too many hobbiest out.

After all, that's how linux started.

They should have licensed it based on third party add-ins. For example. $100 buys you the full version of Delphi. All components, all database clases, etc.

You want to connect to Starbase? (their version of CVS) That's an extra $400. Oh you want data modeling, that's $500, etc.

This way even the hobbiest can pump out quality apps that can be used up and down the Delphi chain. Current the stanard version of Delphi is so stripped that vendors have to ship multiple versions of their product for each version of Delphi. ...Michael...

  11. Big difference between Internet and TV/Radio on FEC May Regulate Online Political Activity · · Score: 4, Insightful

There is one big difference that needs to be taken into account. The Internet is an open medium, compared to TV and radio which require a significant investment to get on air. Some guy in his garage can host a website for pennies a day. For a little more, he can even handle a heavy volume of hits. He can also write a blog for free, etc. Let see him produce a TV show. Because of the diversity of opinion on the Internet, it is a whole different beast. With TV and radio a handful of conglomerates own about 80-90% of TV stations, and I don't know about radio, but it consolidates everytime congress eases the ownership rules. This puts a lot of power in to a few hands, either the owners or people that can afford time. Think of it this way. If everyone was a billionaire, we wouldn't need campaign finance reform. It helps level the playing field. The nature of the Internet already levels the paying field, so why regulate it. ...Michael...

I was shipped a 451 instead of a 411 that I ordered about 7 months ago. Talk about a mistake, whew!

I recently upgraded my drive to 8x and even modded the ROM to boost some 4x media to 8x. I had some trouble with a custom mod I found (nero couldn't find the drive), but once I did the mods myself, which was easier than chewing buble gum and walking at the same time due to the great tools out there, I have been trouble free. I have had one coaster burning 8x on 4x Ritek media which costs me a whopping $.50 a piece.

While Lite-on doesn't encourage this, they are benifiting from it. I know 3 other people at work that bought a Lite-on, partly due to the active development community.

Once DL 16x is common, there really isn't much question which brand I will be buying, unless I can just upgrade the firmware, of course. :-)

Who knows maybe the lite-on can be upgraded to blue-light. :-)
