  1. Re:X translation layer? on picoGUI: An X Alternative? · · Score: 0

Why bother building a translation layer? If trying to move to a new system, then go all out. Trying to achieve backward compatibility on a project like this which is not likely to catch on easily would probably be a waste of effort. Not to say it was their sole fault, but remember how long it took Apple to get a modern OS out the door with backward compatibility? Sure, this is only one aspect, but why do we need a less efficient implementation of X? If you want X, use X. If you want to try something new then go all out. Perhaps it would be possible to run both simultaneously, similar to Mac OS X, but again is it worth the effort? This is an intriguing idea, but emulation is usually a bad idea unless absolutely necessary.

    Peace.

Why do we even need wireless security? Anyone who assumes their media is invincible is probably wrong, especially in this case. So don't use wireless for anything critical. What application of wireless technology requires such strong encryption anyway? If someone really wants to get into your network, they probably will. Wireless networking really should be a type of security through obscurity anyway. In my humble opinion, the reception is so poor even on the good products that the likelihood of shit happening should really be slim.

  4. This is news here but Wellstone is not? on New Starcraft: Ghost Trailers · · Score: 0

Frankly, I doubt if most people on Slashdot care about Blizzard coming up with yet another game to consume lives. I could be wrong, but it has to be wrong when a game is considered bigger news on Slashdot than the death of a liberal, anti-big-business senator. I think that these are both newsworthy here, but as technology gets increasingly political, the death of a senator involved in one of the key races that will determine who controls the US Senate should be considered news. Senator Wellstone was looked at favorably in his one mentioning on Slashdot. But, I digress. Most people should have multiple sources of news anyway. Since this is headline news everywhere else, why put it here? (But then why did Slashdot do 9/11 coverage this year?) Just some stuff to think about. Peace.

    "MozillaZine have updated their article"
Everyone please tell me they see the problem with that sentence. I see this on Slashdot far too often: people assume that since one word represents a group of people, it should be treated as a plural noun. This is very wrong. The sentence should read "MozillaZine has updated its article" or at least "MozillaZine has updated their article." Good grammar and spelling go a long way toward establishing credibility.

No, Slashdot is not Tom's Hardware Guide, but this post is not the same as what Tom's does. The post was simply a link to another site's article. Besides, this subject potentially has broader implications than your Quake FPS rate.

I sheepishly admit I haven't been in a CompUSA in over a year. I am pleased to hear that you seem to have a top-notch store in your area. I might just be too pessimistic, but I doubt that all stores are so friendly. Either way, I was just trying to illustrate my point about retail demos using what I had seen in the past. Seeing a brand-new Mac with a blinking question mark icon on startup at a CompUSA was a truly sad sight. Thank you very much for informing me that things are getting better.

Hopefully a manager won't set up a demo unless they really know what they are doing. Perhaps Wal-Mart will come up with some sort of standard solution to this. We can only pray that they choose to train their employees properly. This reminds me of what happened when Apple tried to get CompUSA to sell their products. The Apple section of the store was understaffed and almost completely unmaintained. It almost certainly would have turned off any consumer from buying a Mac. I realize that it is not the exact same thing here, as Wal-Mart is not a computer store. However, I think we all realize the danger of a poorly implemented demo of Linux-powered PCs.
