  1. Re:RBL's on Ask ISP Owner Barry Shein About the Spam Wars · · Score: 1

I have found RBL's to be very effective. SpamCop saves my server from a *lot* of spam, and use others that are also very helpful. I highly recommend RBL's to anyone running a mail server. That said, I also highly recommend being very selective with the choice of ISP's; understand the criteria by which a server gets blacklisted, and monitor for false positives.

Why should DNSBL's be governmentally regulated? The free market can and is doing a reasonable job of providing this service.

IMHO, Telemarketing (like spam) is a theft/denial of service attack. The only reason I still have a home phone is so that I don't have to give my cell phone number away to companies I don't want to hear from. So, it could be argued that telemarketing is theft, and therefore should be/is illegal.

On the other hand, there are technical solutions (Caller ID, etc.) to this problem, which could be considered simpler.

I hate telemarketing with a passion. But I can't quite figure out where I stand on this law.

  3. My predictions.. on What to Expect from Macworld Tomorrow · · Score: 1
    • Faster iMac's with larger displays (or at least more resolution). Basically making them as good, or better, than the PowerBooks (sans portability).
    • Significant speed bumps in the PowerMac G4's. But still G4-based.
    • New iApp versions requiring a paid upgrade. Hopefully free with dotMac, a new Mac, or an OS upgrade.
    • Some sort of cell phone sync-ing device for most other cell phones. Or an Apple cell phone.
    • Free OS upgrades for dotMac subscribers?
    • An iBook-like tablet. Yes, I know this has been in the rumor mill for years, but since handwriting recognition was a Jaguar feature I think its a reasonable possibility now.

(DotMac features are already somewhat announced on mac.com, so I won't get into those.)

  4. Re:legacy browsers on Ask an Expert About Web Site Accessibility · · Score: 1

Not necessarily. Users may be unable to update their browsers do to technical inability, inadequate hardware (which the user may or may not have the financial resources to upgrade), or just be stuck in a corporate locked-down configuration.

  5. Several Factors on Helping Your Ex-Employer? · · Score: 1

I would take into account several factors:

    • How much time did you spend? Are we talking seconds, minutes, hours?
    • Was the problem the result of something that was not done particularly well, or just a software/hardware failure?
    • Was the solution to the problem something you had documented when you worked there? And if not, was it something you could/should have documented?

Just a few thoughts. In my mind, a big differentiator is whether the solution required your abilities and expertise, or if it just required the person who set up your particular network because no one else knows or has a reasonable way of figuring it out.

I am not saying that the problem was your fault. But I am saying that if you might be partially to blame for it or for requiring your involvement in the solution, then you should probably just do and not think about charging.

That said, there is no excuse for your former boss's not asking nicely or thanking you. Perhaps you should send a "your welcome" card. ;-)
