  1. Would most nerds really vote for Obama? on How Can Nerds Make a Difference In November? · · Score: 1

One thing that is overlooked, is that in the tech and engineering fields, Libertarianism is far more visible than in other demographics. Those folks tend to think Obama and other Dems are socialists and would sooner vote for imperialistic war mongers than someone who the feel will take their money and give it to welfare cases who refuse to work. Mobilizing that demographic will probably (speculation) have more of an adverse effect on Obama's chances than increasing it.

Agreed. That is why CUPS runs as root and your app that needs to print does not have to. Way to go Samsung. How about not outsourcing your driver development to folks that have never developed on said platform?

My thoughts exactly. Misdirection, misinformation, and plain old FUD... Almost seems to be from the Book of Rove.

The part that should be mentioned, but is not and shows a complete lack of true research is the lifespan of the batteries. Apparently some of them die shortly after 100k miles. They (at least the earlier models) were rated at not much more than 100k miles. To replace those batteries cost about $6000-$7000. How many cars even maintain that blue-book price after $100k miles on the odometer? And what happens to those toxic contents once the battery is replaced in the car?

    My $0.02

    Steak and BJ Day!!

Guys need to stick together and make this new holiday a success... quickly. But just like how my wife is always more excited than I am about 2/14, I am definitely more excited than her about 3/14.

    Go figure.

  5. Here's another: "your" instead of "you're" on Hackers, Spelling, and Grammar? · · Score: 1
That one drives me nuts. Along with "their" and "they're" Many people feel that the point of language is to communicate; and that is absolutely true. But to slack off simply because you think that it is good enough to be understood is not an excuse.

One horrible side effect is that in the tech field in the US, there are many people who do not speak English as their native language. The result ? Those who do not communicate naturally in English end up picking up some bad habits from those who think it is just fine to miscommunicate.

Exactly what this post is about and this is one that drives me nuts!

    "Your" is 2nd person possessive.

You mean: "You're", as in the contraction of "you" and "are"

  7. Professors are not there just to teach on Computer Program Makes Essay Grading Easier · · Score: 1

"How long before he's replaced entirely by his own program to cut down on staff costs?" ????

Most professors are not there to teach. Even for those who specialize in fields that their employing school is far from being a leader. Of course, there are subjects in some schools where professors do nothing but teach, but in any scientific field, even the "social sciences", professors are hired to work on other projects. They don't just go from class to class teaching and grading papers and tests in between the classes. One of the few things I learned from the way too many years of being in school.

  8. Headline is incorrect on 95% of IT Projects Not Delivered On Time · · Score: 1

The article does not say 95% of IT projects are not delivered in time. It says only 5% of the IT groups surveyed (in Canada) SAY they always deliver on time.

So, 95% of those IT groups admit to [at some point in time] not delivering a product in time.

  9. MPEG2-AAC not too bad on AAC Put To The Test · · Score: 2, Interesting

I happen to own a Panasonic SV-AV30 (4-in-1), and music management app that comes with it has to options to save in MP3 or MPEG2-AAC. Lately, I have been transcoding the audio from mp3s and cd to 96kbps AAC and the results are surprisingly good. I play it in my car and have not really noticed a much of a difference.

Obviously, the tracks which were bad to begin with will be bad as AACs.

BTW, I have been playing/making music for 14 years and have a pretty good ear when it comes to tone and timbre. Hi-hats on CDs have always bothered me with the lack of warmth and fullness of timbre. So take my word for it if I saw it's not too bad :-)

  10. Fans don't always need to die on Is Your Computer a Fire Hazard Waiting to Happen? · · Score: 1

I had a motherboard burn out a few weeks ago, but all the fans were fully operational. The problem was that I have an air filter in front of one of the fans and it was completely clogged with dust and dirt. One of the power transistors right by the CPU burned. And I mean *burned*. My girlfriend came home to a smoke filled room and the entire house smelled of burning semi-conductor. Those of you with electronic hobbies probably know that smell all too well. I managed to find a sub-par replacement for it. It was a super socket7 AT form factor, and my new board just doesn't compare in speed and performance. So take care of those cases and fans.
