Don't get me wrong lads, I love firefox, but the downloader in 1.x and 2.x is ASSSSSSSSS I know that 3.0 did SOME changes to the downloader but how many? Is it just the UI or resume?
In FF 2.0 on a single core, p4 3ghz, if I open say a 1920x1200 JPG on a web site, then right click to save as, the ENTIRE BROWSER dies in the ass for up to nearly 10 seconds, it even does it on my heavily overclocked quad core machine at home (still 4 or 5 seconds)
There's something about that download box which just completely chugs machines.
I agree, it's the American way. OMG something is defective and they ONLY want to honour it with a replacement product? SUE THEM! I DEMAND COMPENSATION, ALWAYS.
You people wonder why it's becoming a 'nanny' state / world.
We've had revolutions and evoloutions in technology over the last 25 years, from removable media, display devices (GPU and display itself) printing, communications etc
Hard disks are basically a very clever tape drive, it's sequentially laid out information that has a head clever enough to access the data anywhere on the disk.
Sure they don't cost much now, they seem relatively reliable, sometimes even cheap, kind of big and kind of fast, well they seem that way anyhow. In my not so humble opinion, the hard drive is the ass end of our machines, almost aways being responsible for us sitting around waiting. It's high time we had disks in the multi-terrabyte sizes and more so high time we had very very high performance disks. 100mb a second (very best case scenario) simply doesn't cut it, not with 7-20ms random access times. Give us ns level access times and a couple of gb a second please (anyone who responds with SATA is 300gb a second, please excuse yourself from this website)
Hard drives, I love them and I hate them, always the reason my fingers are twiddling.
Yeah the bloody thing is 351$ US here (Australia) It's highway flipping robbery, the PS3 and X360 are similar in price also.
The PS3 actually is still 1000$ AUD or 877$ US for the 60GB Pal, 'middle' backwards compat model (same as your 80, without motorstorm) Can you say 'assholes' - I sure can.
Vista, flying? on a laptop with a slow laptop hard drive? (even the fastest are slow), never seen Vista fast on a laptop.
Wow, just incredible, I can only guess you've either opted for 4gb of ram, got an insanely quick laptop drive (solid storage?) or some kind of raid / dual hard disk solution, perhaps with the swap file on the secondary disk.
Alternatively, your definition of 'flying' and my definition may be vastly different.
Done by John Davidson previously of Ziff / 1up fame, seems to summarise games into who they are suitable for and what they contain. Also seems to be quite unbiased to boot, no leaning towards any system / developer, probably a good thing.
Tab behaviour is frankly rooted since these 2 new releases.
They've been pumping them out fast to boot, it's actually been quite frustating as I could have sworn I've disabled auto updatinig in FF several times before yet it seems to keep doing it.
I'm hoping tab mix plus's author fixes it up, I can't use FF without it now.
Couldn't agree more, with the way the internet works the world has changed, region coding is fucking stupid (especially for games consoles) and releasing TV shows and movies later (by a large degree) often just costs them sales.
The podcast has been slowly going down hill but no Rich Gallop AND no Geoff? WTF
I mean I prefer 1up and I prefer GFW but hotspot was still entertaining. Geoff had been earning a reputation lately as being exceptionally harsh on games though - could be something with that.
Since EGM live is progressively more boring and kiddy, Gametheory (previously Next-gen) is just a little TOO deep each week, it seems that 1up, GFW and PC gamer remain the top casts out there. (GFW is amazingly entertaining, even if you're not a PC gamer) PC Gamer podcast is great - they all seem to come across as genuinely 'nice' people with a passion for games.
As much of a whiny bitch that he was (as am I) I do still miss Luke from 1up though, he would tackle shit head on and call it like it is (well except his halo fanboy-ery) My mornings on the way to work are going slowly down the toilet, soon I'll be listening to music!
I have to agree, I only hated the ewoks AFTER people told me to, if that even makes sense. I never found them painfully intrusive before. Sure they did play a bit too big of a part in ROTJ when you think about it but compared to Jar Jar - good lord. At least the writing / editing / etc was good in ROTJ unlike the prequels.
Also, I don't think anyone DOESN'T remember that sad scene where the ewok pokes his dead buddy's body.
Firstly, I can confirm for you, yep Vista sucked for me too, same driver versions, fully patched machines and the Vista install has several bullshit disk thrash services disabled, it still ran at 34 FPS avg in the benchmark at X settings.
XP ran at 45 FPS avg, same system, same benchmark and settings.
Also the "DX10" features in Vista ARE available in XP with some ini hacking, do a google on it, I think DIGG covered it. Vista, more like shitsta.
That is a great read, very interesting about how little fat is used by excercise and how much fat is lost by simply dieting properly, clearly the two go hand in hand.
I can only use common sense to conclude that one who eats less and exercises is going to have a better cardio vascular system and ideally be more healthy, flexible or stronger perhaps and likely to live longer through 'general' health perhaps.
I'm currently just beggining my fourth attempt at losing weight in my life at 30 and I'm very, very very glad you've linked that. Each previous time I've lost weight I've done this by reducing my food intake incredibly, not being a gluttonous pig (sigh) and changing what types of food I eat. Very, very little exercise, I'm a dork / nerd / geek, I love movies and games, I don't have much time for excercise. and yes, this has worked successfully 4 times now, normally 20->40lbs every 2 or 3 years (you'd think I'd learn)
This time round my plan was to excercise siginificantly more (1 hour cardio a day, 5 days a week) and eat far more of what I'd like with said excercise. Obviously this would be less than when I'm being a binging tool (I love food, LOVE IT) but still eat more than when I'm normally dieting, which is quite strict. To get to my point, after reading your link, it's obvious to me, this would've been a very slow solution if it had worked at all, so I will be doing the both then, very strict food intake and excercise. (assuming his information is correct, I would guess so)
Appreciate it, someone needs to give you the final point to +5
Oh lovely that post is marked as a troll? I mean I can understand over-rated but troll? Have we got more fresh moderators from Digg on the site have we?
Please, bring on the moderators with a cluestick for goodness sakes.
Yep, I work for an Australian Govt Dept and we migrated to XP about 3 years ago and XP SP2 about 3 months ago. Things are really quite smooth at work.
We're buying machines under 800$ with monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc and running XP perfectly fine on them. If we were to consider Vista, the SOE manager wouldn't put Vista on a box with less than dual core and 2gb of ram (and I don't blame him) XP does all we need it to do right now and it does it well.
Vista would be a support nightmare, I can envision workplaces looking at CTX / Ubuntu setups in the near future definately. It's possible we would migrate to Vista but I can't imagine it happening for at least 2 or even 3 years, it'll be 4 years old then - terrible.
Hey, I'm a slashdot user, shouldn't I have a 3TB san for it? (P.S that drive holds re-direct my documents, games, cd images for said games, mp3's, a 'temp' directory AND porn)
Actually some of it was for comical affect, further to that the 'fucking' 'shit' 'motherfucker!' was put on the.JPG's not just the post - so more difficult to remove.
If you work in IT and can't appreciate a good motherfucker now and then, (Especially as a Windows user) you're a sheltered man.
Honestly, XP has it's flaws but a fully patched machine is a fairly reliable box overall. It still has windows general bullshit but considering the age, there's so many great newsgroup / forum and google search* posts for support, most issues are bound t be easy to fix.
* fuck experts exchange, get off the google search results.
Please, don't mod down, just don't mod up if you don't like re-posts? How's that for a deal. Vista's flaw isn't it's lack of a service pack it's the complete lack of THOUGHT in the design of the operating system. The user interface is quite simply, messy - it's appalling, frustrating, confusing and slow.
Re-post below, sorry but damnit if it's not on topic and fitting (mind the language, I was pissed off when I wrote it) (I wonder if Microsoft chumps read this site, I can post this all I want but how do I get these darn issues addressed, where do I post this to tell these idiots to wake the hell up?) Anyhow, here goes..
Then in a little bit more detail (crosspost of a post I made on a forum not more than 24 hours ago, I finally documented precisely why Vista Explorer shits me to tears) Warning: Bad language ahead.
Why does Windows Vista insist on a startup sound, despite me disabling all sounds, they are turned off but it does one at startup, I like quiet and what if I don't want to wake people up?
I've been meaning to make this post for a while, I may have railed on Vista for performance problems, specifically in Crysis, you do need to give a new operating system a 'pass' for a while, let it settle in (it's nearly been a year though!!!)
My beef still sits with Windows Explorer, something I use daily, a lot at work and home, I need it clean, simple and easy to get data into my face as quick as possible so I can react as quickly as possible (yes, I sorry to big note but I am, *that* quick on the keyboard and when working with files)
http://abrasion.shackspace.com/lolsta/argh01.jpg [shackspace.com] Apply to all folders won't let me save the options for "Computer" (My Computer) or Desktop, this is annoying. also, fuck the breadcrumbs bar, in the ASSSSS
http://abrasion.shackspace.com/lolsta/argh02.jpg [shackspace.com] That motherfucker 'task pane' which is taking space up from my damn explorer view. Sure, I found some website suggesting I shrink the size of it (yay) but I can still accidentally click the bastard, plus it still looks messy.
http://abrasion.shackspace.com/lolsta/whywhy01.jpg [shackspace.com] Those little box pluses, I like them, why take them away? It's confusing and slowing down the amount of data I can take in per 'scene' I need info and you're witholding it, just so you can pretend you're neater than you actually are.
http://abrasion.shackspace.com/lolsta/wtf01.jpg [shackspace.com] You call this a save as dialogue box? I hit shift tab twice (yes, I do often, try it people) to navigate quickly to where I normally would on XP. I slap backspace like 10 times fast, this should ensure I'm at desktop, almost instantly (shift tab x2 and backspace x10 takes me 1 second) Does it work? no, of course it doesn't you breadcrumb whores.

Look at it this way.
The demos are free, they will still get them, it's just the gold members get it 1 week earlier as an exclusive.
That's not so bad now is it?
Sure gold may be a rip off but that's not up for debate in this instance, silver is still 'free' - so really, if you don't like it, pony up.

I like the enlarging of the pictures using fingers.
If you're looking at goatse, do you need to use 4 fingers each hand and wear a gold ring though?
I've never seen an increase in performance and I've been using Windows since 3.0.
