hey, that's pretty good analysis and I can see where there will be a prolonged battle at least between DreamCast and PSII. DreamCast really needs to get out some more killer games. They've started out relatively well but things seemed to have slowed down. Their marketing doesn't seem to be captivating enough either. They need to make people feel that they absolutely have to have a Dreamcast, especially while they have a year's head start on Sony. Once the PSII comes out, the battle will be based on games. I don't think anyone will care much about DVD's, Firewire, internet (to a lesser degree).
I personally don't think Sony will bastardize sales of its tier 1 DVD players by putting a hald decent DVD player in the PSII. If people are holding off on purchasing a DVD player for the PSII, they're going to be disappointed.
I wasn't making an issue about the gov'ts decision to monitor drivers on the road. I believe gov't has better ways to spend its resources. I was merely responding to the previous poster who seemed incredulous about the fact the we enjoy a driving privilege. We are all born with certain inalienable rights that all gov'ts should respect, but I don't think driving is one of them.
To play devil's advocate, where does it explicity state in the constitution that you do enjoy the right to drive. There's a lot of stuff about religious freeddom, gun rights, etc., but I can't seem to find the amendment on driving.
I think most rational people realize that it is not too intrusive to have the gov't keep tabs on who is driving. I most certainly don't want 8 year old kids driving. Nor do I want drunkards driving. Rational people realize that privacy and gov't protection often meet in the twain. It's rarely ever just a black and white issue. It's also the fodder for the debate we are engaged in now.
Are you serious? If I'm not mistaken, the gov't issues driving licenses. It would stand that the gov't controls/allows certain people to drive. Those people are:
1) Typically of age (16,17) 2) Have maintained good driving records
If you do not meet the gov'ts criteria, you are subject to penalty. It would appear to me that the gov't treats driving as a privilege. You don't need to go on a hellbent libertarian crusade just because the previous poster was pointing out the obvious. Whether you agree with the gov'ts stance is a different story.
I tell you, put out an article on "privacy rights" and it appears people just toss reason out the window.
are you serious about the home videotaping thing? That is amazing. I live in the USA and the judicial system continues to amaze me. If you have the name of the court case, I would appreciate it.
Congratulations - you wanted Linux to be popular? Well know it is, and the rules are going to change. All this "free stuff" is slowly going to start going away...
*sigh*
When are all you neophytes going to learn? Free, as RMS has explained a billion times, refers to the freedom to make changes to software as the user sees fit. It does not refer to the cost of sofware. You know, the old free speech vs free beer that RMS explains in the GPL. I suspect that you have never read the GPL or the voluminous debates regarding this distinction; or perhaps you have decided to ignore everything and disseminate your own FUD.
If companies release commercial software and allow users to modify the software, I'm sure RMS would not have any problems.
How you got moderated to insightful is beyond me. Ignorant would be more appropiate.
I appreciate your willingness to accept responsibilit for all of mankind. When they mention the cliched statement that "someone is sued every 2 minutes in this country", we will know they are talking about cheese63.
You can demand all you want. Some will listen. Some, like Lucas, won't. Whining about not being able to buy a DVD for Xmas is asinine. You can cloak it under consumerism, capitalism or whateverism of the week. The audacity of you people is laughable in my view.
Your bank analogy is poor. You have no tangible relationship with Lucas. Just because you want a TPM DVD for Christmas does not mean that he needs to accomodate you. The man probably has many reasons for not releasing a DVD:
1) Plans to rerelease in the theatre 2) Doesn't want to put out a DVD months after being released in theatre 3) Wants to put out a quality DVD without being rushed 4) Has concerns about DVD's ability to protect his IP
You are correct, as a consumer you vote with your dollars. But making this non-issue into some kind of Lucas is crapping on us because he doesn't do what The Matrix people are doing issue is a reach. I just don't understand where you sense of entitelment is coming from.
I personally don't care that Lucas makes money from licensing his Star Wars characters. He does that to remain independent of Hollywood's purse strings. As far as I see it, Lucas has no obligation to his customers other than to make sure that the $8 they spend to see his movies are well spent. If he chooses not to release on DVD, that is his perrogative. I don't care what his reasoning is. If he doesn't want to release on DVD because he thinks Satan wrote the DVD standards, then so be it.
It's amazing and downright conceited for you people to make demands on Lucas. Who are you to tell him what to do? The nerve of you people. So many people today are self indulgent and think the world owes them something. Here's a newsflash: Get over yourself.
Great point. Until there is a wide range of movies on dvd, which won't happen for years, there isn't a huge imperative for me to go out and get a player. there is also a morass of dvd standards that confuses the marketplace as well. DVD/ROM, DVD/PC, DVD/Audio, etc. I don't even know if these are the real names but I think you get the point.
For myself, it really boils down to the movies, not the technology. Sure, it would be nice to see the movie in the format that it was released in, but it also would be nice to rent an old Hitchcock film that probably won't make it to DVD for years, if ever.
Will you please get off Bruce's back? Don't ever put him in the same sentence as ESR. If you're going to criticize him, be man or woman enough to attach your name to your comment.
What are you, some kind of empath? You can tell from where you sit that the guy was snapping at the other poster? When I look at it I see that guy is trying to be helpful by pointing him to the link that has the answer to the guy's question.
It's uptight people like you who make me sick. Someone should moderate you down.
I fully understand that I will be moderated down too.

Wow! Those images are startling! The clarity in detail compared to plain ol' JPEG's is remarkable. Can't wait to see this technology moved forward.
Let's see if VA Linux can handle this.

umm, that wasn't the poin of the post. Try reading next time.

Where were you when cheese63 took responsibility?
Good point. I will have to work on perfecting my trolling ways. I now have a benchmark to chase :)

Too late buddy, I already pointed that link out in a rather humourous posting yesterday. Take a look at how many humourless people visit slashdot.

I see nothing wrong with that. They don't make them like that anymore.

Does anyone know the exchange rate from dolar to dollars?
