Honestly though, if you start doing hardware access to vital resources from php PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD make the server machine accessible only on the local lan. In other words, you might want JoeBob the store manager in the back office to be able to have a real-time web interface to moniter the sales line, but you wouldn't want to expose that interface to Dieter the 13 year old German 1337 h4X0r.;-)
Great info (regarding the serial mechanisms) and totally agreed regarding the above. POS apps are rarely on internet capable machines (at least so far)

In exchange for direct functions to send HTTP headers and cookies, you basically give up the ability to "control" the host computer.
PHP is not a be-all language, and it'd turn ugly quickly if they tried to force it to be one.
Bear in mind I am meaning access to functions on the server, not on the PC. You may well understand that but these days it can be iffy as to what people mean by host. PHP has a lot of good control functions and a lot of POS apps are run in the browser, hence my example. I feel PHP is rather well suited for that. A lot of people say it is a "perl replacement" to them I offer that if Perl can not do what you need, maybe a new programmer will help more than a new language:-)
PHP is a great solution for small to mid size businesses. Designing server based database apps is easy and they can run on Linux/MySql (duh!) which is a great kick in the TCO for a small/mid size biz. While I agree with the earlier flame regarding PHP in the enterprise I do think it works pretty well for business apps just not with thousands of users.
One thing I feel is missing is the ability to USE the host system. If I could access serial devices for example I could have a pc as a database server and one as a cash register, then I could have a serial based cash drawer at the PC being controlled by the server (this is a fairly common POS setup) this would be very useful. (I know I can use Perl to do it)
Is AOL keeping all the money and doing nothing for it's users? Or is it going to do something to redistribute it's winnings, like refunds or discounts on on-line fees for a few months?
What do you think 7 Million amounts to with AOL? Refunds or discounts for a month (let alone a few) would be more than 7 million. Most presumably money from the legal department gets divied up in several ways, company profits, ongoing litigation and I would bet in this case to the war on spam. So, in that respect even the fact that they won the money IS something for their subscribers, but I doubt they will see a penny of it.
Warehouses. Many processes in the warehouse are interrupted by leaving the "work area" (which might be a forklift, ladder etc...) to go use the computer. A tablet PC could be with the user instead of stationary. Interruptions of 2 or more minutes multiplied by pay rate and hundreds of employess = thousands of dollars in lost efficiency.
And that means that there is no reason for people like me (who make up most of the 'blow lots of money on new toy' market) to buy these things.
Well, I am one person (IT guy) at a small-mid size company. I have a small budget to see if it is useful. If it is, then I will be purchasing 45 of them. We have 4 gamers in the company, if all four of them buy one they will come close to my sample budget. I think the math escapes you or you use cheat codes with your statistics.
I noticed his economic predictions regarding war with Iraq. Wonderful to see political rhetoric even in TECHNICAL articles. Does this mean we will not get to DSII (Desert Storm II) commercials bearing the "intel inside" logo?
Too bad they are all shit. Its all manufactured bubblegum pop. Mature my ass.
Wow, you are really bitter. Cheer up, it's JUST a radio show. My point was not that the entire top 40 was more mature, perhaps I was not communicating clearly. Rather, that on the whole the popcharts are more mature. Also, by top 40 I do not only refer to the hip-hop top 40 but the alternative lists, country etc...People like Dave Mathews and his countless clones sit well on the charts.
The top 40 lists are guided by album sales, additionally, artist tend to write what sells. I am guessing that the crowd under 25 yrs old downloads much more than over 25 yrs old (completely unsubstantiated guess) that being said, the top 40 does have a lot more mature type sounds lately (more accoustic music, higher vocal quality etc...) Could the traditionally teeny bopper top 40 be getting more guidance from the older more apt to pay crowd? Could teenagers be robbing themselves of their 'right to vote' for the music of their choice? If they are is that something that still matters or will the top 40 fade in the shifting paradigms of the 21st century?
By mining the net I mean finding the servers which have done this type of business and getting permission to mine their databases. Financial data is as a rule stored for around 7 years, these include invoices, Purchase orders etc...
My point is that current data gives nothing to compare to and is not a broad enough sample size to be useful as stand alone data.
I have yet to see a single economic report that says that spending money is a Bad Thing(tm).
You have not seen many financial reports or you have not learned to read them. You read them to determine when and if you should spend, if they all said spend we'd all be broke.
So, how was this purchase not productive? Tito gained (an orbital holiday), the Russians gained (money for the space project). I suspect your criticism of it as being unproductive is in part due to the fact that it was unashamedly self-interested (good on him for it!), and in part because you couldn't afford it yourself.
I can afford to go to Germany, I have gone to Germany. There was no productivity. Holiday is free from productivity. I think the point that was being made is that this rich kid is doing something that benefits others while Tito does only that which benefits tito. Nothing wrong with that but a rose by any other color still lacks productivity.
My own thought on this (my fiance is a biologist and we do a lot of 'those' stats, that is my only qualification) is that internet users are a subset of the people who make up the economy. As more research goes into this they will find that trends indicated by internet usage will have a relationship with actual trends of the 'whole picture' and will later develop the internet/society ratio as a valid indicator. However, until they have this backlog of data to compare it to it will not remain valid.
They could of course mine the net for data on past years and produce 'predictions' for those years to compare with actual data on those years and deduce the ratio from there.
For every email you receive auto-reply with a notice that by sending to that email address the spammer grants publication rights to the Great Spam Archive. (you may wish to be "fair" and give the spammer a chance to opt-out of this)
You insensitive deviant, the poor spammers don't have working reply to addresses, that is unfair to them. I LOVE IT. Perhaps they will have to start having real addresses!!!
Well, actually NASA isn't talking about scrapping ISS because they are low on cash, they're talking about it because Russia is low on cash, despite their space tourism. Which of course doesn't necessarily mean that NASA couldn't benefit financially from shooting tourists into space...
They say they can no longer afford to cover the russians, the implication is they are exceeding budget and unable to sustain it.
Russia does that for one reason, and one reason only -- that money can help them in the very short term to pay off debts that are due, and can push the actual cost of the flight off even longer, and it provides publicity which clearly they hope will cause NASA to step in and foot the bill for the stuff that they're not getting done (as we've been doing all along).
You modded me as a troll then said that dribble?
Every passenger who has paid for their flight has gone up on a SCHEDULED flight with a WORKING crew. No one has gotten their OWN ride thus the money was not adding costs.
Before you post such things 1. read about something 2. think about it and finally you might want to take a basic finance class.
I won't get into wether or not their are new technologies since you have only your own opinion to back it up.
I spill a lot of crap, so my monitor and keyboard are all that can be got at(keyboard and monitor only cost 100$). Backups are made etc... the point is that if I as a home PC user (ok well home when I am not working as a net eng.) can make my pc fool proof I would hope that all the space agencies together could build a robust space station.
There aren't enough consumables on the Space Shuttle to leave it up there for more than about two to three weeks.
Good point, however there is room aboard the shuttle to bring its own consumables and if it is not running, providing life support etc... the station should be able to increase its sustainability. I would bet that they could make the shuttle go for 6 months if they put effort into it (yes and modifications). Though, I am only speculating.
I vote this as my favorite/. topic this year.
Wow, your plug was very subtle. I see from your site that this issue may have crossed your mind before.

If this case were the precedent for a multi million dollar, class action suit against those people that send out all those CDs in the mail.
Ah,sweet irony
What will your company use them for?
Don't know that we will, we will be investigating their use.
Who will buy these?
The only tangible benefit I can really see is totally comfort motivated.
Look to see one mounted on an upright forklift, they are perfect.
And that means that there is no reason for people like me (who make up most of the 'blow lots of money on new toy' market) to buy these things.
Well, I am one person (IT guy) at a small-mid size company. I have a small budget to see if it is useful. If it is, then I will be purchasing 45 of them. As I said that is all speculative.

But how is this news? Ever since the thread on Kernel Notes a month or so ago, most of us have known it this.
Please, don't post "Look how cool and leet I am" and then not even sign your posts. Who mod'd that up to 4

Well, then I will have to get your girlfriend to pose for pictures all over again.

Probably a very good point. Though it be the most advanced earth vehicle ever, it probably doesn't have locks.
