Hey, I am serious about this. If what they want is a living product CoSource.com should be one of their wisest options. But AFAIK SUNT don't think any more Open-Source than MS. Too bad for them, too bad for our community, too bad for Java itself.
I think anti-Linux FUD isn't coming only from Microsoft. SCO also did such schemes just few months ago. I wonder if SUN or IBM still try such trick against Linux.
(How the heck can you call KDE a competitor of RedHat's???) RedHat is certainly favouring Gnome; KDE is favourite of Caldera and Corel. Thus favouring anything else than KDE/Konqueror makes sense to RedHat, since it is disadvantage of their main Linux competitors. (I'm sure RedHat wants Konquerer to suceed just as much. ) Well, I doubt. The more Netscape, the less Konqueror. The less Konqueror, the less Caldera or Corel. (Where do people like you come from, anyway??) Romania, Eastern Europe. Do you?

They (SGI) went out of their NT business since they cannot diferentiate themselves against other NT vendors. In which way SGI plans to diferentiate within Linux community? Their IRIX applications flood will stop one day or another.
Redhat targets two different competitors: Microsoft and the KDE camp. With a working browser they can hit hard not only Microsoft's Internet Explorer ever-growing desktop dominance but also the fast-pacing browser component from KDE called Konqueror. Thus they diferentiate themselves against both types of competition (dominant player and fast-moving pretender). The Sendmail affair is helping Red Hat convince corporations their consulting is broad, not only RedHat Linux itself but also critical corporate applications like e-mail. To me, Redhat marketing plan is A grade until now.
We/.-ers don't think such idea/innovation should be protected by a patent. But Intel is a blue chip and its lawyers (as well as any of its employees and managers) have the duty to fully protect the FUTURE of Intel. They do not intend to actaully request payments from other parties but to defend themselves against such payment request. They were hit by big money request (from DEC and others) just because some silly obvious technique was not Intel patented. They (as IBM and other technology giants) have literaly hundred of thousand of patents for which they don't claim third parties fees.
SuSE is scared by Corel and Intel is scared by AMD. While Intel can still crush AMD, SuSE don't have much chances against Corel, the old warrior of the destop and retail. And their Linux distro shouln't be the best in order to succeed. Corel's marketing machinery will do the most in conquering the desktop. Near Corel Linux pour in WordPerfect, thousand of fonts, CorelDRAW! for Linux, other ten smaller applications, tens of tousand of GIFs and charge Joe User forty US dollars (more or less). And provode them the usual W95/98 GUI in the process.
Suse is profitable while Redhat isn't. OK. The problem is Suse is more on commercial (=retail) side as oposed to Redhat (which business model looks more and more like a mix between Netscape and Oracle). Suse is competing with Caldera, Mandrake and Corel. As a matter of fact, within two years I doubt Suse or Caldera will exist on the retail, which will belong to Corel. Corel is one of the few software houses that really understand how retail business should be done. Conclusion: this investment is welcomed because it fuels them before the desktop and retail battle starts. Nevertheless the summ is too small in order to build a strong product AND company. It is not too late, but it's too little.
...about Lotus Gold? Gor groupware/content management I really think Lotus is outdated and application servers like Zope (www.zope.org) are much convenient. Beside this, Zope is Open Source, Python-powered, better coded.
These days my company, Coltronix.com, made a proposal to Mattel/TLC (current copyright holder over practicaly dead WordStar) to acquire this wordprocessor, claiming that if done Coltronix will imediately release all the code and fiile formats as Open Source (TM). Will you publicly back our proposal to open-source WordStar? Catalin Braescu
in "Being Digital" he supposed about a merger between ATT and Disney, wiyh the new entity being able to sale Mickey toons for less than Bugs Bunny.
I think this kind of mergers are unavoidable because content needs delivery pipes, and delivery pipes needs content.
It also looks like AOL will after all be the king in the next 10 years.
"Well, here it is guys. The V2 source under the GPL. It's the old DJGPP engine that may not even work. Deal with it. "
I don't like this; GPL (or any other way to Open-Source) should not be used to hide a real throw-away.
Stephan, Liz didn't send any e-mail message, anything. What to do?
