I haven't had Scott, but I agree with everything you said about Alfred. He was a great prof and the course was a nice introduction to Cryptography. And man, that guy is incredibly clever, I was constantly amazed.
There shouldn't be anything wrong with scanning the computer signals in YOUR car. It is belongs to YOU.
Proprietary software may be a different story though with its nasty EULAs and things.
Furthermore, the Peoplesoft solution has just been replaced by a newer Peoplesoft system, customized in-house by the on-campus Information Systems group (which is underfunded and mostly unrelated to the Computer science department) to give new features which allow potential employers in on the wretchedness.
Its like they don't even think about tapping into their own talent.
I also lucked out with cheap fibre. My building in Toronto has 100Mb to each apartment, with 5Mb upload. Only 49 CDN/month.
