Maybe its because of that kickass demo, maybe its because I find my Treo 700 to be a pain to use. And, Apple will probably have a better phone in the second version of the thing anyway.
But I WANT IT, DAMMIT. I WANT IT! IS THAT SO WRONG?
But I am not a sysadmin. I am a consultant, usually brought in after things are too fucked up to fix on the cheap. I would love to guide clients through the build out of their data centers, but I can make a LOT more money fixing the screwups of others. When things are in the dumper, I can charge almost anything I want.
Am I greedy? Fuckin-a!
Once I am aboard, I do guide clients through most purchases, but since I work with mostly Doctors and Lawyers offices, there is always some smart guy who fancies themselves as a techie guru since they can fix hearts and livers, who wants to make enterprise-level IT decisions without consulting me, and have their IT flunkie install it.
Those are the calls I get at 3am, which will ultimately pay for my new Hummer.
No, the dude was planning to schedule backups from the Microsoft applet to the other partition every night, thinking that if the first partition failed.......
I wasnt being a smart ass. Tape Backups have taken years from my life expectancy. Any new drive announcement triggers me to think about backing that bitch up. My clients always want the latest new hardware, with no thought as how to protect their data. If I had a time machine, I would go back and find the person who came up with the idea for DLT drives, and kill them in their crib.
I swear to God this is true. I had a client ask me to create two partitions on a 500G drive, which was loaded with 200G of medical insurance claims. When I asked why, he said that although he didnt want to buy another drive, he understood the importance of having a backup for his data.
Because back in the days when Hardware dictated Software, Software generally sucked, for the end-user and wholly unapprochable by anyone without geek-cred. Think COBOL. Hardware has never dictated Software success in the marketplace, but the reverse is true.
DOS and Windows MADE the market for the X-86 machines, just as Apple made the market for the Motorola 68000 series. Companies will purchase whatever hardware necessary to run their preferred apps. Almost never will you see an organization purchase particular software just so that can use a particular Hardware platform. That died out after the Notes on Unix experience.
I did NOT say Microsoft became less productive because of women and minorities.
I said that Microsoft became less productive because of a percieved need to be more sensitive because they became more diverse and like any company, would like to avoid litigation.
If you missed that, I hope you didnt miss that you are an idiot?
Oh brother, climb down from the mountaintop, will ya?
Christ, that some santimony for my ass!
What I described was an environment of very young, very impressionable geekdom, with nothing but C++ and stock options on our minds. I guess I am not surprised at the PC take on what I wrote, but damn!
The point regarding women and minorities, was the fact that EVERYONE had to adjust to a more politically correct and sensitive environment, where you could no longer sling insults down the corrador, in case it bounced off someone with tender feelings.
My comments should not be seen as suggestive of the relative merits of women or minorities, but I probably should have been SENSITIVE enough to understand that some might take it that way.
The bottom line is that Microsoft got 'big company' disease, and like every other company that became more diverse over time, more attention was paid to those soft-skills and the place became less of a free-wheeling code shop.
Not saying it should be this way, but during the gravy period at Microsoft, abuse WAS the culture.
It was so common, that instead of shrinking from it, 99% of those abused took it as a challenge, instead of a personal slight. In the course of an hour, you could go from Genius to Asshole comments about you from the same boss. If you had worked 20 days straight and needed a day off to see a doctor about feeling dizzy, you were branded a slacker or a pussy if something needed to ship and your module was late.
Only when Microsoft started hiring more women and minorities did things change to a large degree. Of course, Microsoft's productivity also took a hit right around that time too.
I wont even go into the relative merits/weaknesses of these products. The fact is that enough of my clients are going to want them installed and require training on them, means its going to be a very good year for me.
The Ojay's said it best: "Money, money, money, money,..............MONAY!"
Microsoft sells tons of their SBS (Small Business Server) suite for just the reasons you state. IMHO, SBS is a steal, even with the limitations imposed by running everything on a single server. SBS is how small businesses afford Exchange Server, and you get the added benefit of SQL 2005, Sharepoint, and ISA Server. (some might not call those tools 'benefits', though.
It wasnt a joke. Exchange does what it does very well. The problem is, too many people think you can go at Microsoft's enterprise tools with ease because they managed to master Windows. Exchange is a not a trivial tool, and your commments suggest you know little about it. If you really believe you have to bring down a server to back up the mail, you should just back away slowly and call someone who knows what they are doing.
No one familiar with Exchange needs a registry hack. Nobody.
The one single app that if bested, would swing things away from Microsoft will have no significant competion in the marketplace. You would have to be some kind of zealot to deny that Exchange 2007 is an ass-kicker.
As much as it might suck for us hardcore Sci-Fi fans, BSG has a large female following. Larger than any previous show of this kind. RDM and the other writers are aware of same, and much of what we see that makes us go "huh" are directly for that audience. All one need do is go to the BSG forum at Television without Pity and you will see wild declarations of love for Helo, requests for more views of Apollo with his shirt off, etc.....
Some of the drama stuff might turn our stomachs, but I think RDM will take audience wherever they can get it. I dont think they are really fucking up the show with all that, but I could do with more stuff like Pegasus, and less nonsense from the base ship. The Sharon baby stuff is getting old, get it over with and move on, dammit.
Someone needs to develop a new weapon, some new anti-baseship tactics, stuff like that. Pegasus was supposedly hunting cylons, so how about showing us some of what they were doing through flashbacks or whatever?
Microsoft is laughing at you again, and you don't even know it.
The idiot blogger in question just did Microsoft's work for them, through his stupid, over the top response to receiving a freebie. All the blogger did, for the 80% of folks who don't care what you think about Microsoft, is to push criticism of the company further into the land of the invisible zealot, to be ignored for all time.
Believe it or not, outside the land of the pocket-protector class, people give a shit about being nice and gracious in the receipt of a gratuity. The idiot-poofter blogger may earn points within his small community, but to the outside world, one has to wonder what the anger is all about?
Blogger gets free, fast laptop. Blogger proceeds to blast giver of said laptop in a manner that suggests more about him (and his 'partner') then about the organization looking to make a buck.
Slashdotters play right along, not realizing that their constant MS bashing has not cost Microsoft a single dime, and when one looks at all the negativity, from a community bordering on the socialistic, it might play right into Microsoft's hands.
The rest of the world isn't like Slashdot, and that most of you don't get that, helps Microsoft more than you know.
It should no longer be a question as to why Microsoft eats your lunch. While all the MS-bashers back away from their IDE to join the bitch-fest, Microsofties chuckle at how much you think your opinions matter to those who make decisions on purchasing software.
Raise your hand if you ever gained marketshare by being an asshole?
Megascenery (www.megascenery.com ) has got Google Earth beat, and although expensive, does a very good job of providing photorealistic scenary for Flight Simulator. They have most of the interesting locations in the US.
Maybe its because of that kickass demo, maybe its because I find my Treo 700 to be a pain to use. And, Apple will probably have a better phone in the second version of the thing anyway.

Kidding, your questions are legit.
Sometimes, sexy is enough.
Otherwise, you would never have us foolish early adopters to begin with.
After checking the feature set on Apple's web site, mark me down for at least two of those things.
My Treo looks positively anemic in comparison. It is enough to overcome my disgust for Cingular too.
I dont think anyone outside of Apple anticipated just how well recieved that phone would be.
Keep servers out of the home, dammit!
Gotta be the case, because I know of no other feasible electric cars. Can someone fix the title?
The reviewer should have Steve Jobs autograph his kneepads.

I kid you not.

I sprained a rib, choking back a laugh.
I want to see the tape drive for that thing, Bitches.

So, what am I saying? Decide that for yourself.

But, Microsoft is making a mint on SBS.
Uh, did you MISS the 2007 context to this thread? Why are you bringing up old shit?
No one familiar with Exchange needs a registry hack. Nobody.
But, your comments make my point for me, thanks.
And you can restore it!!!!!
BWWAAAA!

Worked for Voyager, right? Oh wait.....
An OS that wont run Notes should be at the top of every IT manager's list, as far as I'm concerned.
