  1. Durability on Why Dumbphones Still Dominate, For Now · · Score: 1

For me, and many of my co-workers, smart phones are simply too fragile. Physically, they can't handle our work environment (industrial plant). Those that do buy them are the ones that never leave the office. ;) If they make one that is armored for rugged use, I might consider one. Being able to VNC, etc. via a smart phone sized device would be very nice.

  2. wildlife cameras on Privacy in the Woods? · · Score: 3, Interesting

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife has been setting cameras triggered by infrared motion detectors for years. They are used to photograph animals that use certain water holes and other areas where there is interest in animal movements. They are unmarked and generally well hidden. Many outdoors folks are photographed by them every year, and altough I'm not sure what is done with the data it would be interesting to contact the ODFW and see what legal steps they take to cover themselves.

  3. Curious... on World's First Tree-sitting Weblog · · Score: 1

Although I respect the strength of the resolve of all Sitters, I can only wonder at the effectiveness of this tactic? As I look out my office window, the company I work for is producing many millions of board feet of timber products. Each year, our production numbers increase and each year our environmental efforts increase to ensure the timber industry continues. Point is, the industry is *much* more responsible and sales continue to increase every year. Seems like the General Public isn't as worried that we are going to take a mower to the trees now that it is known that most of the industry has grown up.

  4. Filtering on Broadband via Power Cables trials in Scotland · · Score: 1

Here at work (an industrial plant) we use Siemens ASi bus controlers to do a lot of process control. The concept is similar in that the power and communications are routed on the same conductors. The filtering to do this is very important, and we use some very special isolation transformers, and large filtering UPS's to make the power ultra clean. This also limits the distance of the circuits, as the longer the conductor, the greater the chance of interference. It seems to me that this trail of network-over-power transmission lines will be doomed from interference.

  5. Re:M$ strongarm on Tim O'Reilly Bashes Open Source Efforts in Govt · · Score: 1

Very true, but you *hopefully* don't force your customers into contracts like the one M$ put to Dell recently (although they found a creative loophole). I'm sure you don't. But pressing legislation to the end of propritary liscense exclusion is the issue here. Instead of proving the quality and effectiveness, not to mention value of open-source products, the bill aims to reduce freedom of choice. The strong arm tactic, though completely legitimate, seems against the asthetics of the open-source movement.

  6. M$ strongarm on Tim O'Reilly Bashes Open Source Efforts in Govt · · Score: 1

Is this not similar to MicroShafts' "use my 'product', or else" tactic? Locking anybody or any government into a particular liscense usage is the opposite of the word "open", and it's intetions. This legislation merely opens the door for proprietary software companies to propose similar bills, based on this prescident.
