the 30 second skip feature was taken out of the latest tivo update. it's no longer available.

Not true. 30-second skip was available via a backdoor in the original TiVo software (1.3), unavailable in version 2.0, and is back as a backdoor option in the current software version (2.5).

By the way, to enable it, press [Select] [Play] [Select] [3] [0] [Select] during playback of a recorded show. The ->| button now functions as the 30-second skip button.

  2. Neato custom setup on Review of the Audiotron Stereo MP3 Component · · Score: 1

I've been dying to share the mp3 setup that my two roommates built from scratch.

Tucked away behind our couch is one of my roommate's old computers--a Pentium 133 or so. It functions as a dedicated mp3 server. All of the mp3s in our apartment are either stored locally on its hard drive or accessible to it via our network.

Attached to the computer is an IRMan, which sits discretely on top of our stereo receiver. Additionally, the computer outputs sound into the receiver (duh).

To actually play the mp3s via the stereo, one of my roommates wrote a custom interface for his Phillips Pronto remote that has a "button" for EACH and every album in our collection, sorted alphabetically by artist. Combined with the Pronto's ability to do multiple actions with one button press, we've got push button access to any album in our collection.

  8. Re:No Thanks... on Dial U for Union · · Score: 1

My first experience with unions was when I was 15 years old. I got a part-time job at the local grocery store chain for around $4 an hour. I soon learned that I had to join a union--which, even at the time, I found humorous. (A union for grocery baggers?)

Anyway, after deductions for federal taxes, state taxes, local taxes, social security, uniform fee (someone's got to pay for those orange and blue striped ties!), and union dues, my first few paychecks ended up working out to less than $2 an hour.

Needless to say, my career as a grocery bagger was a brief one...

  10. Re:The retail industry and common sense. on Dynamic Pricing Returns · · Score: 1

I remember a microeconomics class in college in which we discussed Victoria's Secret using price discrimination with gender being the price-determining factor. Apparently, men were being granted a greater discount than women on catalog purchases. I suppose (and hope) that most men are more reluctant to purchase lingerie than women, and Victoria's Secret decided to lower prices for men accordingly. Victoria's Secret was sued by a woman who alleged illegal price discrimination, and was eventually forced by the FTC to halt the practice.
