Good point. This raises an interesting question. with the billions of dollars in debts, if worldcom bellys up, how will the next owners of the network handle it? The infrastructure is too extensive to simply "shelve" until things get worked out. Will the network be split up? Bought out? It looks like WorldCom could have a network firesale.
As much as I would love to mail some cash to my favorite band, if they are signed with a halfway intelligent label, there will be a clause in the contract forbidding them from being paid for the music they record while under contract unless it comes through the label. They will nullify their contract with the label if they accept it.
yeah, it sucks, but on the bright side, you may give them a sign that a record label isn't 100 % neccessary these days. Perhaps all that is needed is a recording studio, a band, and some way for people to hear the music, ie download site, internet radio, etc.
Thanks! I got to go to macworld thursday. They had a lot of ipod there, and I plugged the new remote into my old 5 gig ipod. Lo and behold, it works! The old remote works without firmware update (works on 1.1)
Apple's new golden codec is MPEG-4. True, Sorenson is going to release MPEG-4 encoders soon, all the effort that went into sorenson 3 looks to be wasted. How do you make money off of a codec after apple basically abandons it? Re-tool slightly, and sell it to a competitor that would love to get their hands on a sorenson codec. I can see why they are both pissed. Apple pushes a competitor (MPEG-4) and Sorenson makes up for this by selling their codec to a competitor (Macromedia).
In my opinion, Apple is the jerk in this situation. They build up this huge relationship over the years, then they drop Sorenson for MPEG-4 in a second.
As an owner of an original iPod, I too would like a clock, improved interface, calendar, etc.
As of now, there is no firmware update whatsoever on the main iPod website (even for old ipods). Perhaps us older owners can take advantage of this as well?
also, the remote does not come with the 5 gb new model. Can it be ordered seperately? possibly on ebay? and if so, will it work on older ipods? (they have the connectors for it, but are they connected to the main board?
I agree with you that retroactive fees stink, but they are legal. Ex post facto only covers criminal laws. All other laws and ordinances can be made retroactive. (like when tax laws are changed)
