  1. Age of Envy on The Problem With Abundance · · Score: 1
Some people just can't enjoy progress in action.

This guy makes a lot of observations but provides very little, if any, proof of concept. Does he really want us to believe that the progression and advancement of mans mind is to be stagnate in order to keep the "natural checks and balances of scarcity"? He asks us to consider "What are the long term consequences if this advance reduces costs to zero, or increases access so that everyone with a desire to do so, can use the technology?" I believe this is a trick question, because the cost will never be zero, not while man continues to cling to moral values. That said the answer lies in his question: Advancement. We work out the kinks with time as we have throughout history.

It seems that his "theory" is more based on ether or the abundance of food he apparently has no problem with consuming, than reality. It also seems contradictory or incredibly incomplete. He quotes the life of the human family as "50,000-plus years", which eludes to theories of evolution and the big bang. If he believes in evolution, then isn't that what his observation would serve to prove, evolution in progress.
  2. hacking brick and mortar on More Jail Time For Computer Crime Starting Next Month · · Score: 1

Why are there so many more hackers in the real world then there is in cyberspace? Is it that hacking gates, windows, doors, and safes is easier? It certainly can't be that the risk is less. And there is no way you could use the defense of "I was just showing them that the building was venerable, serious."

Oh, that's right, I steal and vandalize for the sake of better security in the future and for the challenge.

    Do you seriously believe this?

If you want the case law go down to the court house where the case took place and get your free copy of that case. Perhaps when you've collected a large amount of these documents and compiled them into some form that allows for searches and easy access, you can give it away for free. But my money is against that ever happening.

    Everyone is worth their hire.

  4. it's easy on Would a Boycott of the MPAA/RIAA Help Matters? · · Score: 1

If you feel it is something you should do then do it. You may go through an annoying stage of preachiness, but it won't hurt you. When McDonalds raised the cost on plain cheese burgers from .69 to .99, I called it quits. It's been 4 years. Besides Wendy's is better. The last movie I saw in a theatre was LOTR and it will be the next. As other's have mentioned video and music can be had at used stores. And if those dry up because of a boycott, then read a book. I have always been fascinated by the courage of the early pioneers in this country. It seemed at times that they barely hesitated to boycott or what not. Of course the society was smaller, but in reality so is ours. How many of us are really friends with everyone in our extended neighborhoods, city, county, state, you get the point.

Sometime ago, someone on /. recommended returning all the junk mail prepaid envelopes. I thought that was a great idea, so I started doing it. I've mention it to friends and family and now many of them do it out of habit.

Sometimes my 2 cents becomes 4. sorry.

  5. This should be left to AT Speech Therapists on A Humanitarian Engineering Problem · · Score: 2, Interesting
This has been an interesting read. It is interesting to see how techie/engineer types would look at the solution to this problem. I could suggest a solution but I'd be cheating.

My wife is a Speech & Language Pathologist who is also a Assistive Technology Practitioner. This basically means she is certified in AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) & AT (Assistive Technology). This problem is the very thing covered by this field. They work with anyone who's verbal communication skills are lacking for what ever reason, no matter the physical or cognitive handicap.

I've seen the devices created for such problems both with children and the elderly. It usually involves foam, some wires and a battery operated device. Simple, easy to use and just as important, cheap. Many of the suggestions posted thus far have been over engineered.

Now, on the tech side of things. This profession could use some help with small devices (PDA size) and a free OS (you choose). There is a device on the market that allows a patient to select pictures to form sentences (or phrases). Currently they are in the thousands of dollars and insurances don't always cover the cost. Typically for children the parents sue the school district and the district is forced to make the purchase with next year's funds (read: higher taxes). It would be nice if cheaper alternatives were available.
