She's got an interesting argument: outsourcing means cheaper IT products, meaning businesses will buy more, meaning more products to make & manage = net gain of IT jobs in the US. Ummm, did you follow that?"
But... if I'm unemployed, I won't have any money to buy these "IT products", no matter how cheap they are. This is a worse idea than that "trickle down economics". Sure, the rich will make more jobs...in house cleaning and other dead-end 'careers'.
Inter-country outsourcing sucks, in that I am not seeing any of the positive effects of it for US, and it has been about 3 or 4 years that it's been going on. Granted, 3 or 4 years is not a long time in terms of economics, but why should I care, if I have to spend those years unemployed, living on a subsistance level?
OTOH, I'm all for intra-country outsourcing. I am actually looking forward to a time when I can telecommute, and do 90% of my job from from another state, where my salary will go farther...
While I am all for cheap medical devices, majority of the cost on the device is due to a) design (which includes safety design too) and b) certification/compliance testing.
I really don't think it is such a good idea to 'interface' myself directly to a computer, what with all 450W power supplies, leaky components, and the oh-so-deadly micro shocks I could be having.
Sorry, but medicine is one of the last places I'd use opensource hardware.
So the question is, is there a lawsuit coming? I fly JetBlue 3 or 4 times a year, and I've always considered the company to be reasonable in the way they run their business.
OTOH, I don't appreciate violation of my privacy, and would definitely consider joining a class action lawsuit just to teach them a lesson.
Not quite a site license, but for around $700, you can get a copy of any MS OS, plus Visual Studio for the CS department (any student in computer department is eligible) via the academic contract. Only $700, which would make it cheaper than RedHat's deal... at least as far as CS students are concerned.
Haha! It looks like slashdot had an effect. This is the reply you get from sending email to Eric Deming's address:
Please be advised, we are working on this issue. Here is text from our latest posting to NANAE on google. It just went up, so it may not show up for a while.
All,
We at Belkin apologize for the recent trouble our customers have experienced with the wireless router/browser redirect issue. We unintentionally overlooked the effect this feature would have. We never intended to compromise the trust of our customers, and we never intend to do so in the future.
We are taking responsibility for this, and we will be offering firmware fixes early next week. We do not have exact details yet as we are still working on them, and will continue to work on them over the weekend. What we can tell you now is that each Router's firmware that incorporates Parental Control as an option will be changed.
I'll keep posting as things develop. Stay tuned...
Difference for DVDs at least is that they provide added value, when compared to CDs. Sure, you can view the movie in divx, but they are much clearer on a DVD, plus you get the added benefits of "special features".
Maybe now that QT is LGPL, Mathworks will finally transition MATLAB on OS X out of X11 and make it behave like a proper OS X app. ...One can dream....
Cancer-fighting bear?!? Sweet!

I sure hope not. I just received a PowerBook which I intend to sync with my Nokia 3650 phone. All this, naturally, via bluetooth.
As of right now, nothing can replace it in utility and ease of use.
