And while you're looking through State of the Union transcripts, why don't you look for the multiple reasons that Bush gave to justify the war in Iraq. (Here's a hint: The President never gives just one reason to justify going to war.)

No, the bottom 90% do not pay more. The 2004 numbers have already been shared which prove it. And as far as tax rates, everyone pays the same 12% Social Security tax. You do have a point about gains on investments, but again, the majority of income earned (even by the rich) comes from wages and not from investment gains. The bottom 90% still pay a lower fraction of their income than the top 10% do.

  5. Re:Breaking News on Netcraft Shows Smartech Running Ohio Election Servers · · Score: 1

Because the numbers you cite have already been corrected about. The top 10% of the people control 44% of the wealth, and pay 68% of the taxes. Therefore, they are paying a higher percentage of their income in taxes. Meanwhile, the bottom 90% control 56% of the wealth, but only pay 32% of the taxes. So yes, the rich do pay a higher percentage of their income in taxes, which is only a "shocker"to people who don't rely on made-up numbers to bolster their arguments.

That's why a flat tax (with a standard deduction, of course) is such a good idea: because it avoids emotional arguments like this one. I have known people making $30,000 a year who always had extra money to give to charity, and I have known people making $150,000 a year who were just scraping by. Sure, the family living at the poverty level might be scraping by, but their income will probably go up the next year when they get raises out of their minimum-wage positions (which are usually taken by teenagers or retirees). Maybe one spouse needs to take night classes to get a better job. Sure, that means less time with the kids, but if it improves the overall quality of life for the family, isn't the sacrifice worth it?

And of course, you're talking about the fortunate upper-class doctor who makes so much more money, but you ignore the fact that he busted his hump through six years of medical school and hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of medical bills. The implication is that those who make less deserve to pay little to no taxes, and those who make more deserve to pay more, since their higher income obviously comes from luck, and not from hard work and possibly years of sacrifice. It's class envy at its worst. Remember, as soon as you point to the guy above you and say, "He makes more than me, so he should give me some of his money,"there is someone below you saying the same thing about you.

Here's a little hint for the mathematically challenged: You can't just assign percentages to different things and assume that they are equivalent. I like how you took "the bottom 90% pay 30% of the taxes" and changed it to mean "the bottom 90% pay a 30% tax rate [paying six times the rate the top 10% does]."

Here's another hint for those who don't understand how our tax system works: The top 10% will always pay a higher percentage of their taxable income (note I said PERCENTAGE, not AMOUNT) than the bottom 90% will. It's a mathematical certainty. Of course, under a truly fair system, everyone would pay the same percentage of their income in taxes, but we have a graduated tax system, so the top 10% pay a higher percentage of their income than anyone else.

Just listen to any State of the Union address prior to the war to hear the multiple reasons listed out in great detail. You may also want to read U.N. Resolution 1441 to see a list of Iraq's violations. It is a specious argument to claim that we only went into Iraq for one reason, and then claim that the war was unjust because that reason did not hold up. Just because you can't comprehend the complexities of international politics and economics, that doesn't mean that the President's decision was a simplistic one.

If the studios offer their music at half the cost, they may not make any profit, and may even be taking a loss on each song. When you lose money on every song, selling "10x the product" is hardly an attractive proposition for them.

The reason that illegal Russian sites can sell the music for half the price is because they are not paying any money to the studios or the artists. So really, all your illegal purchases prove is that people will pay a lower price for a stolen product. Your Russian website is not a "workable model,"because it does not pay the people who create and market the music; it only pays the person who stole it and sold it to you.

And yes, you are deluded...not that the RIAA doesn't "get it,"but that your argument is anything other than an excuse for theft.

All of those techniques are roughly equivalent to learning to play a guitar (although one with only one string, natch).

Did you actually read the article? It mentions some musicians who have songs in the game, but also other musicians who are not affiliated with it whatsoever, and they are all obsessed with the game. I'm sure that your $300 starter guitar won't sound anything like Black Sabbath, even if you did take years practicing Iron Man. With Guitar Hero, you can spend a short amount of time practicing, and feel like a lead guitarist on tons of classic songs. Maybe I don't want to spend years learning to master the guitar. Maybe I just want to play for a while, feel like a lead guitarist, and then get back to my life. What's wrong with that? As to why a real guitarist would play this game, it's the same reason why my pilot friend plays flight-simulator games in his spare time: because it's fun. You might as well ask why someone would play a fighting game, instead of studying martial arts and becoming a black belt, or play a first-person shooter, instead of learning to operate a real firearm. No matter how long I practice, I will never fight hordes of enemies in hand-to-hand combat, single-handedly repel an alien invasion, or flawlessly play the entire solo to Free Bird in front of a packed arena audience. But like many others, I play video games as an escape, to do things I could never do in real life. And apparently, even Real Musicians agree with me.

He's been saying for years that the new versions were the only versions he would release, so it seems likely that this is, as he said, a response to the demand from fans.
