MS/game devs did it with win 95 (exclusive games) and they did it with XP/2k (exclusive games). Each of those was a bigger success than the previous OS. WTF makes you think that people accept it for vista and exclusive games? Past experiance shows they will.

The only differance I can see (from what I recall) is that previously, exclusive games weren't announced before the release of the OS. They usually waited until the OS sold a few copies to make sure it would be a success.

I guess you dont remember the days of Wing Commander 2. When people bought an extra 4 megs of memory just to play. Or bought a memory managment software program to free up more of the memory in the 640k.

Heck, just look at todays games. Lots of ppl upgraded graphics cards to play doom3, hl2, same with FEAR, Quake 4 etc.

So yeah, the average Joe might well buy it just to play halo. They will probably figure they have to upgrade anyway at some point, why not upgrade now? And all those people who buy a new computer every year or so because it slows down (from spyware), will just buy a new computer with vista on it to play it.

I'm using google desktop right now and for a while I've been wondering if there's anything better. What I really want is something that searches file/folder names for strings or words. I dont care a whole lot about the contents.
For instance if I had a file names "my family pics from vacation to hawaii in 2006 2314.jpg"
I'd like to be able to find that with a search of keywords like:
    family pics
    hawaii vacation
    2006 pics
etc. Currently google desktop turns up way too many hits, when all I want are files with those words in the filename.

So I want more of a filename (and foldername!) searcher than anything else. Bonus if it can only search .jpg files for the above example. And something thats faster than that awefully slow windows search. Windows search usually does more of what I want than google desktop does, but dang is it slow, and not very flexible. Heck, I'd keep google if it had something to limit its searching to filenames instead of the insides of files.

RTFA, the disks weren't encrypted. They can just grab all the personal data they want off of the disks. They are relying on security by obscurity because they say its a proprietary format. Any format someone can make, someone else can make something to read it. How hard is it to search for SSN in a data file?

And even better, what if the plain text on the disks is also on the tapes? Since you have the plain text original, you can easily decrypt the final encrypted version.

They are just trying to make it sound good when in reality, if the thieves realize what they have, they can make a killing off of it.

  11. Re:low level format? whatever on Stubborn Spyware Removal Advice? · · Score: 1

If one could do a true low level format on an IDE drive (you can't btw), you'd be erasing the defect table and adding all those sectors to the drive as well. Nowadays if you do the "low level" format option in drive utils, it just zeroes it. If you are worried about security, you should use an eraser program that writes several patterns on a byte, not just zeros (although the only way to be 100% secure is to physically destroy the drive, if someone wanted to spend millions of bucks they could still recover data thats been overwritten many times). If you want to just erase stuff, just do a normal format. Low level formats were done with RLL/MFM drives, but not with IDE.

Its true that if you aren't connected to the internet, you aren't vulnerable to attack from it. So you could just turn off your broadband while you aren't using it if it was that big of a deal to you. But you can still get exploited and viruses and trojans from email or visiting websites whenever you are connected. So you need to keep updated with a firewall (or router) to be protected anyway.

Slowness doesn't matter much, viruses or trojans dont care what connection you are on. And dialup could still be used to send out spam email if you are hit by a trojan. Email doesn't require much bandwidth.

The other thing some might bring up is that with dialup your IP changes every time you connect. But you can get broadband (like dyanmic IP DSL) that does the same thing. That will only protect you from those who are targeting you specifically, like moving to a new house every month or week. Most attacks just randomly scan through ranges of IP addresses to see if you are vulnerable, kinda like I would guess most robbers just randomly choose a rich looking house.

So no, dialup is not significantly safer in today's enviroment.
