The "Do not download images...." is only a good function in short sight. If no one ever even sees the adds then (free) sites will stop getting money for putting them there, thus having to generate money elseway by, for example, making them a pay site. Now that would truly suck more than a banner every once in a while. What i DO like however is the pop-up stopper. =) Of course I could imply my own argument against myself but some adds just messes stuff up.....

Well, you are right. For the most part. I use to work on a company as the sysadmin when they had only 20-30 people working there. The company grew to a size of about 250 employees before i felt the need for a co-admin. The two of us was the most apreciated department within the company service staff wich is not really common and our "users" where all att least masters of science working as highly overpaid programmers. This was mainly due to the fact that we shared our knowledge and encouraged people to ask their stupid questions.
The downside, ofcourse, is the STUPID questions that has to do with their internet bank, ICQ/Firewall issue, home networking, PDA and cell phones that we didn't support or knew anything about. I would never get those if I wasn't such a nice guy in the first place. And, not to be forgotten, that you always suspected everyone that was nice to you of "wanting something" like a bigger HDD or more memmory..... You just waited for that little "oh btw, i have a little question now that you are here anyway..."

One thing that is really important is that management never feel the need to take the advice from the sysadmins and that the programmers and managment don't understand each other. That is not always the techies fault actually....

We are not overpaid by our companies, we just get everything we want for free by the government just for sitting there.

Yep. I get forced into patching and upgrading my environment all the time even though it's perfectly stable and safe. "There might be improvements in the upgrade".

    - Upgrade just to be sure. We have to be on the very edge of technology.

I agree when you say that the UN system is teethless and vague. But instead of throwing away the idea why not try to affect it in a positive direction? This institution is for judging in matter such as genocide and torture wich I think is still illegal in the US. They will not trial you for running a stop sign on your way to your platoon. The Taliban justice system is a bit extreme to compare with, isn't it? There is however in some muslim countries a majority (not just men btw) for having muslim ideas and values throughout the justice system, as there is christian values throughout ours. The world where we all live have to take all faiths, values and religions into consideration before making an institution with the power to rule over states and i think the US would make a perfect member of such an institution. About not chasing after people in other countries... This list with people that had a "possible link" with terrorists who had their accounts frozen without actually being accused with anything and without an explanaition.... I'd call it chasing after people that has not committed a crime in the US.

As far as I remember the idea was to charge people that wouldn't be charged in their own country. A US citizen would only stand trial if the US justice system wouldnt or was unable to judge the matter themself.
If two countries are at war then ofcourse there would be better to have an international way of cleaning up afterwards or should the winner (if there is one in a war) do that?
The "our system is better than their system" is a narrow way of seeing things and many, many people have a different oppinion of how a society should be run and justice achieved.
Try convincing a palestinian about why the western way is the "light of the world".

The US government is very keen on charging people in other countries for crimes but refuse to take their own medecine... What "higher" kind of morale and justice is that?

I think you are forgetting one aspect. You say that "the production is (usually) growing every year and so the pie we get to divide is getter bigger every year. Definitely not zero sum." That might be true when speaking of economic value in a local perspective, but some ingredients of the local pie might have been stolen (such as natural resources aquired by the use of power or threat of economic or armed war, oil for instance). This makes the local "pie" smaller and smaller for the nations or gropus that are being exploited. The economic value might improve for the corporations or nations that benefit from cheap labour in development countries but what about human value in a global pie? Where does that blend in? Certainly not in the local economy pie.... Remember that you can't eat money or oil....

Newer means better equipment such as better cameras for example but just the time it takes to launch a probe from earth and wait for it to get to Pluto for instance makes the technology old even when the mission starts. To have theese probes circulating other planets and moons for a couple of extra years might not be so bad after all.... I am very tempted to get into an argument why newer isn't always better, but i'll pass this time! ;)
