Well, I've got the freedb from last year in MySQL format if you want it. It's available at http://www.indycomics.org/FreeDB (please be kind to my T1)
Granted it is from November (20051104) from last year. I will be releasing the current update in MySQL format soon.
All of the source code used to generate the MySQL version is available at the same place. Hope someone finds it useful.
Well, if you want to use some real numbers for the back of the envelope calculations then you should at least use google's own numbers. From their own site at http://www.google.com/appliance/hardware.html take a look at the GB-8008. Eight 1U systems that can index 15M documents. 15M / 8 = 1.875M. This is spread out over five collections of 3M each.
With google claiming 4,285,199,774 pages (docs) indexed divided by the above figure will get you 2,286 machines.
Now this figure seems pretty low to me. Even if you double it, considering one cluster on each coast, you're still not near what others have speculated.
I remember looking for something that would allow me to hook up a radio to my PC (and be controlled by it)
You might want to check out the ICOM PCR-1000. It hooks up via RS-232 serial and can be completely controlled via Linux. qtpcr is a nice Linux/Unix software package that will control the reciever. If you can find an older one on ebay, there are several chip/hardware mods available.
