mp3 is alredy the defacto standard for cd-ripping. Support for Ogg is just too late to matter to anyone except for geeks on this site.
The only company whose support would make any difference is... MicroSoft. If they blessed Ogg, you might see players ship that can handle it. Otherwise, it's just a nerd's pipe dream. If fraunhoffer ever gets serious, maybe you'll see some games and similar things ship with Ogg's instead of mp3's. But this race is already run.
I beg to differ. Although MP3 is firmly entrenched, the vast amount of encoders available ensures that an MP3 cannot be judged by bitrate. I know of several people who would be overjoyed to see a "real" standard for audio, with an official encoder. Just one encoder. Not an official one and lots of spinoffs. If the encoder is done right, and is free, open-source, and open to outside contribution, then there are no reason for spinoffs. This ensures identical quality across the board.
Why is this important? File-sharing networks. I HATE downloading a 192 kbps MP3, and finding it to sound like a 96 kbps one made by LAME.
Somebody should form a group that would attempt to show the government which patents are "wrongful" or "absurd". Such as that IBM patent you mentioned. Maybe it could be something like the EFF. Or a division of the EFF.
You people are all saying "Just switch to PNG" as if it can be done seamlessly and immediately. This is ridiculous. Many images on the Internet are in JPG format. Even assuming people could immediately switch to PNG, this wouldn't solve the problem because JPEG is actually a format where the amount of compression applied to pictures can be varied on a scale of 0 to 100. The amount of compression cannot be fine tuned as well with a PNG image.
Wrong. IIRC, PNG uses zlib for compression. Some programs, such as The GIMP allow to vary the level of compression.
But you're right, it's not the same thing as JPEGs compression.
Contracts will be awarded on a value for money basis.
Well, seing as most OSS is free-as-in-beer, they should get a much better value for money by seitching to Linux. Then, they would be able to lower taxes, cause they wouldn't have to pay tribute to MS!
I think I'll go move to England...
My son is playing Zelda: Ocarina of Time right now, and I'd love to see it hacked to anti-alias the textures better, if nothing else.
That's what N64 emulators are for. Get a good video card with TV-out, and a fast computer to go with it, and you can play Ocarina of Time like never before. I think one of the graphics plugins even supports Anisotropic filtering.
Also, Can anyone hack a game that was originally just for a gaming console?
Yes, I think that is evidenced well enough by all the level-conversion mods that have popped up for Super Mario World, some quite good. You can get more info on these at Zophar's Domain

Ever since RealOne... no. I used to use it quite often, but RealOne seem to have a bad habit of taking over my system.

Well, now that Ogg Vorbis 1.0 is out, I wouldn't really mind.
Unfortunately, people don't like change...
Maybe, but PNG and JPEG are two entirely different paradigms.
JPEG is a lossy algorithm, which gets rid of "unnoticeable" parts of the image, in order to lower the file size.
PNG, on the other hand, is a lossless algorithm, which, when decompressed, gives you byte-for-byte the original image.
If we lose PNG, we can come up with something else. Good lossless algorithms abound. But, AFAIK, there aren't that many GOOD replacements for JPEG.
