  1. Google called me yesterday on Los Angeles Goes Google Apps With Microsoft Cash · · Score: 2, Interesting

I run a small 200+ computer operation and had Google Enterprise call yesterday. We use their Postini service for spam and really like it. The sales rep on the line wanted to know if we were interested in their Apps product and had mentioned that Los Angeles recently switched to it. Call me traditional or old-fashioned, but I like having physical access to my data. I also like being responsible for ensuring our services stay up and running. If e-mail is down, I can fix it, instead of calling someone else to check it out for me. Several techs in our state from a recent meeting shared this sentiment as well. What is the general overall feeling from IT on "cloud computing"? I'd be curious the thoughts from the LA IT department...

And this point is worth reiterating: open-source software is free. No cost. Zero. Zilch.'"
Be careful with this statement. Some people consider software that costs nothing to be of lesser quality or to have something wrong with it. A coworker went to Staples and purchased a version of McAfee for home, even after I told her AVG would do everything she wanted it to, and for free. I got the impression that she didn't think something that didn't cost anything would be able to do what she wanted...

  7. Thin clients on The Life and Death of Microsoft Software · · Score: 1

This may be worthy of another topic in itself, but I think we will be looking at replacing some desktop machines with thin clients next year. The patching routine, as well as the routine explained in the summary, wears on my 1 man IT department, not to mention the constant hardware failures of the PCs themselves. I'm sure there will be software/firmware updates to the thin clients, but the goal is to reduce the administrative burden as much as possible. Of course, I'll be working through the same process in determing server software, operating system, etc... --

  8. We've always done this on Security Fears Prod Firms to Limit Staff Web Use · · Score: 2, Insightful

I've always prevented my users from downloading *any* program from the internet. There are a multitude of reasons: spyware, bandwidth issues, etc. I just think it makes good sense to limit the crud that can be put on machines. I don't have to wonder if the problem a user is having is due to something they downloaded. Being Healthcare, I'm also bound by HIPAA. My interpretation of it is what I just mentioned above. It actually gets me in a frizzle (word?) when I see the junk my father's company allows them to put on their machines. They aren't healthcare, but I would think the hassle of tech support would be magnified many times over...

  9. We lucked out on McAfee Anti-Virus Causes Widespread File Damage · · Score: 3, Interesting

Our main system here downloads the DAT updates at 2 AM every day. As of Friday morning, it had downloaded the 4714 files, then downloaded the 4716's on Saturday morning, completely missing the 4715's. It appears we missed a bullet. Good luck to all the sysadmin's out there working on cleaning this up!
