    IRC, Yahoo! Messenger, Aol Instant Messenger and MSN Messenger. These are all used on public access machines. To confirm this, check out the public access machines at Kinko's, also check out public access machines at college campuses. All of those are installed onto those machines.

    I just set these up on my friends PC last night (linux PC)

    the reason most people get into trouble with nt4/win2k/winxp is because they run as administrator 24/7. You wouldn't do that with root in unix, so why do it in Windows?

    The most unix sysadmins would leave a box running as admin in windonws is because they are used to being able to install applications, reconfigure system properties, chage user info, run any application without logging out and back in.

    Its only recently that you can do some of this on windows. I was a windows andmin whoswitched over to UNIX, and I love being able to work on any users box without having to log them out and than log myself in.

    Yes but if they need to set up any servers (terminal/domain) anything that required win2k advanced, thats not a one time license, and neith is it a one time for the clients to be allowed to use it.

    What are you talking about?? Ill be the first to say that win2k has great easy ways to lock down specific files (im not an anti ms troll) But UNIX does too

    *NIX is a better solution for this because of the OS security. Every time a virus is found that takes advantage of IIS or Active Directory you can lean back in your chair and not worry.

    If you really want to make lab users conforatble configure XDM to allow them to log into fvwm95.

    Because trouble shooting a Linux box fo Maa and Paa public requires someone who has a positive clueon count. Htese people are much more expensive than supporting a windows client (at the tier one support).

    Whos taxes are forcing people over the age of 55 to come to the USA for treatment of cancer because the canadian healt care system deams them (not worth the expence).

    Our 'multi-billion' dollar war machine kept all of europe from falling under the iron curtin, It has protected south Korea from a nuclear capable northern neighbor, it has freed the nation of Kuaitt. It won WW2 in the pacific and played a huge part (much larger than the canadians) in Europe.

    I dont expect a high on the horse Canadian to say thank you, so I do with you shutting the hell up.

    I would have to agree here, Last night my roomate had to use my Linux (FVWM) box and she hated the fact it was so mouse intensive. When I told here not only could I reconfigure FVWM for here but could bump on any number of window managers she just sighed and sadi 'I need something standard so if I go to a firends house their PC is the same as mine'. This is what drives windows.

    I love X 10 times wore than windows, but what linux needs is a *DEFAULT* *SYSTEM* set of cut/copy/paste keys that will work in anything from gnome/ked to just a bash session.

    I am trying to wean our developers off of windows one application at a time. My comany has nowhere near that many people (at best we would roll an os for 7,000).

    The tough part is application support, speaking of which if anyone knows of a good MS Project replacement (that can run on either windows or Linux) I would be greatful..

    If I can get the developers onto open source stuff (I have already given them Dia and took away Visio) first, than proposing a new OS would not cause a riot...

    I have seen ads on this, the add follow you, from youre prepective, its really cool stuff. If it was a tv and you tried to look back (ie fix a point on the wall) it would become distorded due to both a doppler and perspective.

    Ill try to find if TLC is showing it again and post if I can find it, its a great effect.

    So law makers equl developers of the law, and layers equal the application users of the law. The point if it was a friggen stupid analogy in the first palce.

    Those who make the code are like those who make the law they set the rules down for those who use and are subject to it. Its a piss poor analogy and ytou should let it go.

    btw you have the right to defend youself with or without a law degree in a US court.

    Not the point, somebaody said we dont allow people to participate in law w/o a degree.. Beyond the fact you dont need a law degree to *MAKE* the friggen law you dont need a degree to act on it either.

    I may be a bit off but there are over 530 nation law makers at least 60% of them dont have law degrees and are elected by a populus which is comprised of at least 99% people without law degrees. These are the people who make the law, developers make the code.

    Apples and oranges. A better law/health comparison would be saying we should not print the law for all to read because it will hurt layers. And we chould burn all the anatomy books so doctors can maintain their worth.

    In fact we should not allow common people to participate in Law at all, but still be subject to it because obviously we have made some dumb laws, let the pros do it and get paid. Youre welcome to your opinion but dont use stupid analogies to get it across..

    No but it does show as a developer you can get paid to work on open source software. The is no closed source software that can "eventually grow to feed all programmers world-wide".

    The money for open source will come from support, not software sales. Redhat has a good buisness model, and hopefully they will be able to make it in a market place currently very hostile to anything not M$. They are partnerd with some great companies like IBM so you will see them move up the server foodchain from low end hardware for routine tasks (mail, proxy, firewall...) to big data crunching tasks.

    Ask youself this, if you work for a company and youre using open source software (OS/Office Suite/whatever) in addition to the employees at Redhat and IBM how likely are you to hire one or two developers to create a more effecient environment. Now if you work for an MS shop how likely are you to hire any developers??

    the fact is both models will work (for different companies) but open source has shown the power developers have to shape the industry, not weakend us at all..

    No it does not, one company pushing closed standards hurt developers. Becuase there can be no innovation the IP holder does not approve.

    Open source allows developers to fine tune applications for their clients, If I am X company I would be more likely to hire a developer who could rewrite and retune an applicaiton because its open source. If I am Y company locked into closed source I am not likely to hire a developer because what can he do for me?

    To me it looking like Linux/KDE with wine installed. Lindows is really a piece of crap, it will not run office2000 or AOL(any version).

    If they could get AOL to work my father would be off of windows right now, but Lindows is an OS without a market (geeks want to do it themselves, and John Q wants AOL)
