I usually (i do this for a living) install windows, install ZoneAlarm, then connect to network.
I mostly have to use this on computers hooked up through MSN internet, or some of the other large Inet providers.
As far as all the "this guy an idiot" remarks here, ignore them, they are idiots that dont think about the fact that most users aren't versed in internet security, and dont realize the threats that are out there. It was a good question, I just hope others aren't turned off from asking other questions of the like.
Most people that own cars dont know how to service them either, that's why there are mechanics to go ask and webpages that deal with car maintenance.
