    I know, but I'm not going to read through the whole thing before I get started (I usually want to use the system to find out how to use and configure it).
    But I guess I can't have everything (but grouped configuration settings should maybe in in an appendix somewhere?)

    ?

    It is noted in there, was it not good enough for the doc guys?

    Thanks, but WTF?!? Am I asking too much for a list of these options somewhere (or am I totally bind to have missed it?) or it a few dives through the source-code for me?

    Good article there, now I can finally remove all of the crap from my file server that I don't need (good timing too since I just got it up).

    Now, if I can only work out why sendmail (or at least the mailqueue) still insists on running *sigh*

    You can not play games on it.
    Is Quake 3 not good enough for you?

    It cannot be used by my grandma.
    Grandma can't use a toaster, what's your point?

    It lacks a GUI of any note.

    There is no support available for it.
    No support for wimps.

    It is an assortment of fragmented OSes.
    You must have it confused with Red Hat. The colours are similar and those might confuse you.

    It cannot be run on the x86 platform.

    You have to compile everything and know C.
    *wonders why my install took less than 2 hours on a 486*

    Support for the latest hardware is always poor.

    I doubt that my site will have a problem with that (since it missed the blaster thing), but I'm awaiting to see my bandwidth bill for my normal internet usage this month from my ISP (for my home usage). I've already been quite busy on the internet and I've clocked over 400 of the Swen worm being downloaded from my many email accounts in less than two days.
    If this keeps up, I'm looking at ~800MB of additional traffic.

    (I will still maintain that I will reluctantly download 400megs of stuff that I've already got installed!)

    They seem to have gone at MS a bit lately over their security problems though and several of their editors (well, ZDNet editors, but it's all the same company) seem to be pretty-much anti-microsoft in some of their columns.

    since many times they just seem to editorialize stories and add in useless comments etc.

    Yeah, it would be nice if they would seperate out the editorials form the news sometimes, but it's an interesting mix sometimes than just the raw-hard news.

    A MOD is a free content update for a commercial product (in this case, Half-Life).

    You usually don't write MODs for MODs

    (MODs = TC MODs)

    I think that would be the idea (but that's getting into weird DRM terriority, I would assume that you would have a CD-key if you bought it in stores and a username/password otherwise so you're not dealing with anything icky).

    Also, you make it seem like a port to Linux is a certain thing.

    When they rework the code to run natively on VMS, I won't have to buy HL2 again, I'll just have to buy a new machine ;)

    I though I implied that when i said -

    Indeed, the closed nature of steam at the moment does present problems for community groups. However, valve doesn't even seem to think that steam would be at all a participant in community projects. All it seems to be geared towards doing is downloading updates and content for commercial software.

    I dunno, maybe valve will go for some non-commercial licensing scheme in the future.

    But I don't really see the great potential for steam in the community as an updater, it's method for updating software seems to just check version numbers and if they are different just download the thing again (well, the changed files), not at all hard to do but steam has a collected environment. Where's the attraction?

    Even if steam was avalible for Linux, what could you do with it? Download steam updates?

    I'd be interesting if valve did release a version for linux, but game companies seem to see linux as a small side-benefit when making a game these days. :/

    I though it would be more like -

    1. Install your game (HL/whatever)
    2. Install update (which would include steam, et. al.)

    Sierra Utilities? You mean that thing that crashes when I run it and can't find any ftp locations for shit?

    You can get the steam SDK from valve, but you do need to sign an NDA with them first, still, hopefully valve will open up to community prospects (but they seem to have the commercial aspects of steam on their minds at the moment)

    Have you posted the bug to the forums or emailed valve about problems?

    In my experiences, the team at valve has got to be the most receptive group of people on the planet.
    Personally, my only problems with steam is the un-verboseness of the client when it is doing things like downloading or "updating."

    Well, it looks like apple is moving up (even though I still like my old tcsh shell and don't want to have to learn a bunch of new commands), but any user of microsoft's UNIX tools (probably none of you) will know that Microsoft provides you with the Korn shell to use.

    It may look good, but its functionality as an office workstation is impaired. Unless, of course, you have managed to eliminate all need for paper and take all coffee/meals away from the machine (which is highly inefficent).

    I don't really have anything permanent as I generally use it to transport stuff from my PC to my mac (and vice versa) if I'm too lazy to put the network cable in a iron out the weird problems I get.
    I would love to be able to store actual stuff and use them at my "educational" institution, but they have limited our access to the machines so much, that I would need to basically manually reinstall windows components and bring my own drivers to get the key to work!
