As suggested in the article, you can block the vulnerability in Avant by disabling ActiveX (Tools | Disable ActiveX). This is how I browse with Avant by default, along with:
Makes pages load very fast, and if I need one of those functions for the page I'm on, I just toggle it on for the session.
Between these security features and still having the compatibility of IE, that's why I love Avant so much. Yes I used Firefox for 2 weeks, and went back to Avant.
Just as an FYI regarding this, the Diebold machines have numbered plastic seals that are recorded weeks prior to the election. If a seal is broken, the machine number is recorded and removed from being used in the election.
Also, the actual machines inside the boxes ARE protected with a lock and key. You can't even turn them on without the key.
Having the boxes sitting unprotected sounds stupid, but they are really safer than it sounds. Obviously not impossible to someone that really puts some effort into it, but a little better than the Georgia Tech student observed.
Actually, back as far as Return of the Jedi, R2 was climbing stairs. Check out when Luke and R2 arrive at Jabba's palace, they have to go down a few stairs to be presented to Jabba.
