  1. CG is not the only answer... on Digital SFX Wizard Answers Slashdot Questions · · Score: 1

"In your example of puppetry, I too was a little disappointed to see the CG Yoda; especially in the closeups it just wasn't exactly the same."

I agree with this completely. I mean, I'm sure I'm not the only one who was disappointed by the choice to render Yoda 24/7 in CG. It would have been fine in the fight scene (unless you have an invisible, acrobatic puppeteer), but in other scenes he didn't look believable. And I say that about a film in which almost every background and object was computer generated.

But something I don't see Mr. Beier mention is the general drop in CG quality in recent films IMO. Mummy 2, Scorpion King, and even Spiderman had some horrible shots. With budgets soaring into the scores of millions you have to ask, where the hell is the money going?

"The major detractor was the user interface, since it didn't feel like a Windows application."

Wait...since when is that a negative point? I've always thought Mozilla felt fairly platform independent, which since I'm still burdened with shame for using Wintel (oh forgive me Steve Jobs), helps me assauge some guilt.

I mean, MS could learn from these guys, how much would we pay for "Windows that doesn't feel like Windows?"

  5. Re:The RIAA just doesn't get it on RIAA Smacked by DoS · · Score: 2, Informative

"When Napster was big, I purchased 75-100 CDs in two years and enjoyed about 80% of them. Since then, I have purchased about 10 CDs and enjoyed about 20% of them."

While that may be the case for you, unfortunately in my experience, for every one person who purchases more cd's, ten more think, "Hey, why the hell should I spend money on CDs when I can get them for free?" I know that at first I bought more CDs due to Napster/Audiogalaxy, but as time went on it began to get easier and easier to justify not shelling out the $18 ("Why don't I wait and buy ***** DVD instead...oh wait...I can download that too.) Maybe that says more about the RIAA's price structure, I don't know.

But with entertainment and diversion literally everywhere we go, it seems to me that most people will take whatever they can get for free, no matter the moral justification. We live in a culture that has taken the concept of "me-first" and run with it.

While I think your view is ideal, I think the truth of the matter is quite different. (Not that it justifies the draconian actions of the RIAA/MPAA and their congress-critters.)
