  1. Do these hacks work? Anybody know? on Miyazaki's Spirited Away U.S. Release · · Score: 1
If someone does not know the answer to this question, then mod up or something to someone who knows:

I have a Japanese OS with open bays in my computer. If I want to watch DVDs from two regions, could I buy a DVD player from each of those two countries and install them?

If so, could I then use the same software to address each CD and play them pretty well seamlessly?

As a separate hack, could I hook a Japanese system with a J DVD player to a 100 base T network and watch the DVD from a US computer? I mean... could happen, right? More bandwidth needed?

The REAL BIG problem with region encoding happens to a small minority of people who exist and grow in both cultures. I am a victim.

  2. Re:Already done in Japan on Animated Ads in a Subway Near You · · Score: 1

They are in almost any subway in Japan. Even in relatively small cities of about a million, you can see the ads on virtually every line. The LEDs give a relatively high initial cost, but a low operating cost. Of course, the LED display can be changed to accomodate different ad campaigns. The train from Aomori to Hokkaido has very many long displays... as you can imagine from that loooooong tunnel. I would say that the technology has been used AT LEAST for the last 3 years in Japan, and 5 years would not surprise me.

  3. REALLY small Japan on The Golden Age of Cup Manufacturing · · Score: 1

I think the 'smaller than a US courtesy cup' observation is an exaggeration. McDonald's has cup sizes that go up to about 500ml. They do have the smaller sizes, of course. I drink the large or the medium usually. On a more interesting note, smaller and larger sizes of cans are sold here (commonly about 10 years ago, but still now) side by side in vending machines.... ... For THE SAME PRICE!! Go figure. If you really want to address diminishing marginal value, you should take a look at this. Less thirsty people do not want to drink half a can and then have to carry a goofy half empty can around. They buy the smaller size because it is less inconvenient after they have been satisfied. Cool huh? There are even VERY small cans that are sold sometimes. I think that they are 6oz... maybe even 4oz... about 80ml, I think. Apparently, people buy them. It is literally two 'swigs' and you are done.
