He's trolling. While AVG is not the most effective AV according to the test trials, rating under all the commercial AV's and some of the free ones, it still does the job fine for home users who aren't getting hundreds of emails a day. I might doubt its effectiveness for a business. I used it for three years until recently and it never missed anything, even though I get probably a dozen viruses a day in email that SBC Yahoo doesn't catch.
Rarely got false positives, either, except for the EICAR AV test (which AV's are supposed to detect), some trojans I have sitting in my hacker tools directory (which of course it is ALSO supposed to detect), and the odd aberration when AdAware was running.
It could be - I had the same problem with AVG on Windows XP after it had been running for quite some time on 2000 without problems. I don't think AVG has any particular faults, it's probably just something screwed up in the Registry or after some Windows patch install - but it was too much of a pain to figure out what it was.
So I dumped it and got Avast which so far works fine - although I need to turn off the voice reporting since I hate it when I listen to the Corrs and it pops up screaming in my headphones that the virus database has been updated...
To be fair, the only source for that Rice report is KPFA Radio (IIRC) in San Francisco. Apparently Brown WAS warned, but by who is not certain. My point stands, tho.
Yeah, but the ones with no talent aren't still around twenty years later. As evidence, I give you "Hooty and the Blowfish"...
Now there ARE those who say KISS has no talent - but let's face it, their talent was never music, but showmanship.
On the other hand, my favorite band, the Corrs, has loads of talent (and they look good), but despite being around 15 years and going platinum in multiple countries, they're only sold more than 1 million of one album in the United States. So they're in the middle. Mostly it's because they just don't spend enough time in the US. I don't know what Atlantic Records is thinking.
In any event, my point was not that every company with better tech succeeds in the short term, but that if a company with lesser tech succeeds, they will EVENTUALLY be replaced by a company (or other source, like OSS) with better tech. And I think Microsoft will become the greatest example of that. To say it can't happen is to ignore history, just as to say the US military can't be beaten is to ignore history.
One can't ignore history until history itself is deprecated by a Singularity.
Nah - George will see to it that Bill only goes to a Federal camp...and be out in six months.
Then he'll be allowed to pay off his restitution for $5 a month like me...
But his campaign contributions will still be in the millions... In fact, George will probably demand Bill turn over the Gates Foundation to the Carlyle Group in exchange for that six months in a camp...
I'm not so sure about that - between capacitors exploding and people getting terminally depressed by being unable to do the simplest things on a computer, I'm sure PCs and especially Windows have killed at least several people by now...
The war-chest billions they pissed away on a one-time stock prop scheme?
And market share is NOT a defense against better technology and poor MARKETING.
And your "partners" will dump you in a heartbeat if the profit motive tells them to.
There's only ONE advantage a company has in the tech field - better tech.
And decent marketing - which Microsoft does NOT have now, since they are relying on compromised "studies" and BS a five-year-old can see through (but apparently, not many CEOs and CIOs can.)
And that "obsession and drive" is actually why Microsoft will never change unless both Bill and Steve go down in a plane somewhere...
And THAT is why Microsoft is going to go down...because their management CAN'T change like IBM's did - despite all the talk about "never count Bill out" which is bullshit. He's the world's richest guy - where is his motivation to change? Look at every statement out of his mouth! NOTHING has changed about the way he does business!
In twenty years, I don't think I've ever seen any.
Other than my own massively commented stuff, of course.
And by comments, I don't mean stuff like "this is an ugly hack, but I'm doing it anyway" - or the classic Windows comment: "We're morons" - which pops up all over commercial AND OSS code.
Asshole geeks design an entire LANGUAGE - Perl - so they DIDN'T have to type anything, let alone documentation!
I just today on the Net saw a SIX THOUSAND PLUS CHARACTER REGULAR EXPRESSION to implement email address checking! And not ONE comment! Whoever did that has WAY too much time on their hands!
They just slipped a National ID Card through the military appropriations bill, plus a law allowing the Department of Homeland Security to be completely FREE OF ANY LAW OR JUDICIAL OVERSIGHT in constructing a barrier on the border near San Diego. In other words, if DHS wants to murder you while constructing this barrier, they are entirely free to do so as there is no Federal or state jurisdiction to prevent them by order of Congress.
Apparently, this is due to an "interpretation" of one of the Constitution's clauses that allows Congress to do this.
This is a precedent for allowing DHS to be allowed the same freedom in ALL cases - thus nullifying the Constitution.
And tell me how they're going to get DVD burners to work with this media when they can't even get top of the line Taiyo Yuden media to work with my stupid Lite-On!
The entire point of referencing a fat person's lap (and I'm 50 lbs overweight, so I can say this) is that they DON'T have room for anything to be put in their lap. STUFF SLIDES OFF, MORONS!
I predict within five years either this issue will go away or Sun will be forced to OSS Java themselves - in which case this issue will go away.
I agree that Mono is treading risky ground trying to engineer something Microsoft won't sue them for, and I agree there is SOME slim risk that Sun, as it collapses over the next five or ten years, may try some stupid desperate move that screws up the Java licensing. When and IF that happens, we'll deal with it. Or the Chinese will.
People just want to complain about stuff - even if it's free - so it makes them look "morally superior" to everybody else.
In other words, STFU. If you don't like Java,.Net or Mono, write your own system. And when YOU decide to stick it to everybody by patenting it, I'll remember your lame ass.

Right.
That's the difference between IBM and Microsoft.
As IBM betters its fortunates, it gives us free stuff.
As Microsoft betters its fortunes, it gives us, oh, DRM, viruses, BSOD, ever increasing fees, endless FUD and BS from Gates, etc. ad nauseum.
Actually I have tons of networking texts downloaded from alt.binaries.ebooks.technical and as long as I have a Board of Governors Fee Waiver, I could take the rest of the Cisco courses pretty much free - although since you have to do the exercises as part of the grade, you still have to buy the textbook - but the one I had is good for the first two courses at least and probably the remaining two IIRC. I actually used last year's book - only a couple of the exercises had been changed and they're downloadable from the Cisco site anyway.
I found Leo Baca and Carlos Colom to be extremely knowledgeable people. Both of them know their stuff - they do networking contracts on the side for people like JPL.
The course itself has problems, mostly due to problems insuring everybody can get hold of a cable when needed in the labs, and problems with the quality of the online Cisco course itself - I am absolutely appalled at how many typos, screwups and just plain crap is buried in the Cisco course offerings!
Let's put it this way - coming out of the AMC Theater on Van Ness at 1 AM allows me to pass them on Larkin around the Century Theater (a strip club). And I used to live near the corner of Post and Larkin where they hang out.
For the record, I never actually used their services. Mostly because I can't afford it...
Now where you really want to go to get a blowjob from one of these ladies is the PowerExchange sex club at 74 Otis (right across the street from the City College personnel offices and Noncredit division, interestingly). That will cost you to get in - but there's the odd chance you might get laid for free since there are frequently some women down there looking to get laid. Check out their Web site here.
Bounded on four sides by Geary Street (top), Market Street and the Civic Center (bottom), Van Ness Avenue (left), and Powell Street (right).
Currently called "Little Saigon" as most of the population is now Vietnamese.
Actually, most of the hookers are found up around Larkin and Post just above the Tenderloin. Wander around there at two in the morning to see what I mean.
And, yes, many of them are Asian transsexuals - and believe me, most of those you cannot tell the difference - especially in the dark.
Just be careful you don't wander onto Polk Street, aka "Polk Gulch" which is next to Van Ness on the left side. That's gay chickenhawk country.

leaves several vulnerabilities at LEAST as serious as the Firefox ones open UNTIL NEXT MONTH!
Who said something about "time to patch" favoring MS?
Firefox: vulnerabilities announced Monday.
Patched by Thursday morning.
Microsoft: vulnerabilities announced months ago.
Patched - "Next month - maybe".

Just like a drug dealer:
Step 1: Here, try this free Windows you got with your new computer!
Step 2: Here, make all your applications with Access databases and Excel spreadsheets and ActiveX and COM+! Feels GOOD, doesn't it?
Step 3: Here it will only cost you X dollars to upgrade to this better grade of drug^H^H^H^HWindows!
Step 4: Profit!
Step 5: Monopoly profit!
Step 6: Shoot competing drug^H^H^H^Hsoftware dealers.
Step 7: Arrest, conviction of monopoly status, prison!
I'm waiting for step 7, George...
"Already Microsoft is spending 30% to 35% of its research and development budget on security issues"
Or is that 35% of its R&D budget FOR security issues - which would be about $1.95, I figure...
"Longhorn will make security issues a thing of the past."
Right, Bill - we KNOW how EVERY new version of Windows is going to be the "latest and greatest" - that's been your mantra since the first DOS...
And it was bullshit then and it's bullshit now.
Another Windows troll. It's everybody's fault but Gates and Windows. Yeah, right.
THIS is why we're better off with IBM.
Commented code?
WTF is that?

$80+ billion more wasted on Iraq.
Less civil rights for the US citizen.
Just about sums it up.
Anybody who can't see what's wrong with this picture is just a moron.
'Course, no shortage of those on

You want security?
Read up on ninjutsu. They had the philosophy down pat in Japan eight hundred years ago.
Imagine a Bush press conference in this manner:
Q: Why did we invade Iraq?
A: I wanted the oil, I wanted to help Israel dominate the Middle East (so we can get the oil), and I wanted to prove I'm tougher than Dad.
Q: Why should we reform Social Security?
A: So I can give hundreds of billions of dollars to my cronies on Wall Street.
Q: Are we going to attack Iran?
A: Of course, I've reviewed the plans already. I told you, we want the oil and Israel doesn't like them.
Or Bill Clinton:
Q: What about the charges you had an affair with Monica Lewinsky?
A: I did not have sex with that woman. Please note I'm referring to Hillary. You are free to infer whatever you like from that.
Or Condi Rice:
Q: Did anyone in the White House suspect 9/11 could happen?
A: Sure - we all did. We watched Lone Gunmen six months ago like everybody else.
