    Since the mid 90's people have been telling me that software that can write software better than programmers can is just around the corner.

    If my memory isn't failing with age, people have been saying that for a lot longer than that.

  2. Natural compensation methods happen on a geological timescale. If we were releasing this CO2 over a million-year period, it wouldn't be nearly as much of a problem. Releasing it over a century is a problem.

    Last I read anything serious by Scott Adams, he was buying into "irreducible complexity", which translates into "Evolution didn't happen, because I have a bad imagination". I wouldn't trust him to evaluate anything.

    Also, IIRC sea level has in general gone up, and I don't think a link to dilbert.com is worth following up.

    There is some outcry. However, the purpose of the census is to collect statistical facts (the Constitutionally required one is the number of people), not to potentially use some feature against someone somehow.

  7. A good reviewer can write a review that tells me whether I want to see a movie, regardless of whether I agree with the reviewer's taste. If the reviewer wants art, and I want cheap entertainment, and I can tell whether the entertainment's good enough from a review, that's fine. If the reviewer wants art, and I can't tell whether it'll entertain me, that's a bad reviewer.

    I'm not going to condone breaking investment law, but the guy is a positive force in society, if only because of what he did for cost to near Earth orbit. He'd have to do a lot more bad stuff before becoming a net negative.

    What does political support of a nation mean? I know a Communist who wants what's best for the US as much as I do. We differ a lot on what's best, and even more about how to get there, but we both want the US to do well.

    Is there a technology that doesn't have a clear potential for abuse? I'm a techie. For my working life, I want to be part of creating technology. I'm also a citizen, and express my views about the use of technology, and in that capacity I want to prevent certain things from happening regardless of technology.

    Unless it's my finger, in which it works maybe once a year. I turned off fingerprint unlocking because it isn't saving me any time or hassle and while turned on there's a bare possibility that someone could turn on my iPhone when I don't want them to.

    The Bill of Rights is not a bad hill to die on. If I support freedom of speech, I have to accept that people will say obnoxious and hateful things. If I don't support freedom of speech, I have less standing to object if someone tries to shut me up. Therefore, I think that Nazi propaganda should be legal, if not moral.

    Whether something should be done and whether it should be legal are two separate related concepts.

    The EM spectrum is a limited resource, and so radio stations can be regulated. Fiber is not a limited resource, and the FCC can't regulate it.

    If you're using them to do real, professional, paid work, Apple computers are reasonably cheap. If you're using them at home for things that won't make a profit, they're expensive.

    Apple has stated repeatedly they want nothing like the singularity, that desktops are inherently different than tablets or mobile devices.

    Thing is, I keep hearing that like the idea that the iPhone didn't need native development when you could do so much stuff on the web...right up until they introduced the iOS SDK.

    If Apple doesn't care about security, why the Secure Enclave on the iPhone 5S on? Why argue against the FBI's request? Apple clearly cares about security. You can speculate about their motives, but they do care.

    And misogynists have no problem with overgeneralizing females anyway, and think "feminist" is a real term of opprobrium. The feminists I know have sound ideas about what "strong" is. Hint: It's possible to be a strong woman without being bitchy.

    The comment didn't sound misogynist because it was false. It sounded misogynist because it's irrelevant. Sure, women are generally smaller and weaker than men. That's completely not relevant to a superhero movie. If you're at all concerned with "plausibility", you're making a big mistake going to any MCU movie.

    I liked the 2016 Ghostbusters. It was funny, which is all a Ghostbusters movie has ever aimed for.
