    Why dont they just not RENDER the pretty shadows or highlights?

    If XWindows can 'copy' the look of aqua using standard rendering, which makes it 90% close but not the same, then why cannot
    apple just grow a brain cell and let people choose NOT TO USE 50% of the cpu to render pretty shadows which ARE NOT NEEDED.

    OSX desktop should NOT BE SLOW on todays fast cpus, even if it is 100% cpu and no GPU. Because geez even quake1 using 100% software renderer
    in 1024 is darn faster than OSX doing 100x more complex rendering, including shadows.

    So either OSX on PURPOSE makes it slow so people buy better HW or they are just bad coders.

    Lets pretend that real optimized (made by uber cool 35yo hackers) desktop in 100% software is as fast as GPU hardware, even on 600mhz machines.
    Then why would anyone upgrade? There is less compellingness reasons to upgrade.

    Even if its by sly tricks - like assigning the software renderer to the 'not most experienced' programmers. Im sure Id software could make a soft-rendered to do OSX effects on windows/buttons
    using 10% cpu in 60fps in 1600x1280 resolution. (The only GPU requirements are line draws and rect blits/rect fills).

    Ever run linux/X on a slow mac? its funny how its 10x faster than OSX.

    I mean, look at mars, constant sat photos and IR maps etc... thats more accurate than just 2 robots taking temps.

    Those scientists are damn lazy to not design more remote weather stations powered by solar and sat comms. ohhh is it too expensive? then get SOME OTHER scientists to
    design a cheap system, rather than out sourcing it to a supplier at 100x build cost. Oh the uni dean wont let you? you have protocols and procedures?

    Averages tell you little. Its like using a 8x8 pixel camera, very little information.

    We didnt do this 50 years ago so why now?

    Too much laws and criminality will eventually be the downfall of society because everyone will be made a criminal.

    Maybe every parent should not let their child out of their house, and lock the doors then.

    The lesson here is... Keep things more secret, dont tell anyone, cover your tracks, dont trust even
    your parents or the law. Tough laws really worked in the soviet union didnt they.

    But to wait two years for one, you loose far more intel in two years.

    There is nothing wrong with a cheap devices that can be replaced VERY quickly...

    Gone are the days of expensive manufacturing and long time to delivery.

    Today if its broke, we can deliver a new one in 24hrs. In that case, if its cheap, have 5 spares in the boot of the car.

    Why have one device thats 10x the cost that CAN BREAK, its better to have 10 devices and 1/10th the cost that might last if
    taken care of.

    So a pentagon devices might cost $30000, because of 2 years dev cost and built by the most expensive factories in down town San Fran.
    A $400 device with some hacks and leather casing could last long enough, and you just buy 10 of them, $4000 bucks.

    If you want it water proof, build a casing for it, you can buy digital camera underwater casings far cheaper than Pentagon prices ;)

    1999... We have a new driver model, its the best in the world and its perfect, Embrace Win2000 NOW... then it takes years for people to write decent drivers.

    2003... XP uses same model, drivers keep working

    2006... VSTA changes to new model, oh sorry, yeah we got some new coders and they say the last drivers were crap, and written by coders who dont comment their code. We need something new, that uses DRM and needs billions of new man hours in redevelopment.

    Oh and what happened to rewriting 90% of the interface/desktop in .net because .net is soooo coool and fast.... oh it didnt work, was too slow used too much ram!! ah go back to MFC/C++ .
    If MS wont use it, why would the rest of the world. Again remind me, what MS application or OS component uses .Net ? OR is it just a feature to kill Java and annoy sun.

    How qualified was bill gates at age 24? He would have never been hired by anyone, but was smart enough
    to run a 'slightly suspect business model', ie the true business way, screw partners to the wall to earn a good profit.

    People might be generally 75% qualified, they just might lack the 'required 5 years experience' though I fail to see how
    many indians in india could have that too. Did they have the internet in 1992 in india? NO, so I dont think
    there are many old school guys there that grew up with computers when they were 14.

    Someone who learns to program at the age of 14-15 is going to be a far more natural programmer I think.
    Just like many 'prodigys' in arts and sports, they start early, or your too old to be learning it.

    99% of software runs on xp/win2k, very little of it is vista only, and it cannot offer anything exclusive.

    just buy the cheapest bare ass PC, with no KB/monitor and use it via VNC.

    Pay for vista, what a joke, just use OEM pcs with xp.

    The policy could be that, text is easy to change and edit. But a scanned image of an email (perhaps with a crc) is harder
    to 'change' and alter. Its as close to an original paper document you can find.

    They both just have to BOYCOTT drivers for Vista, they are not required by law or contract to make drivers.

    So who else is the choice besides these two for good 3d? nothing, absolutely nothing, matrox? no not really...

    They hold the cards, either make buggy drivers, and MSs DX10 vista scheme will die, or just dont support vista, due
    to less than 50m install base marketing idealogy.

    MS holds no power, their DX10 + DRM is useless with no supported 3d cards apart from intels chipsets which are crap.

    I hate managers/owners who are just so analy stingy, I mean they cannot see the benefit of giving
    someone a 10-15% commission. They make you a million, and you pay them $1000. Wow thats fair, I can see
    that manager/owner would rather have it all for himself, but what they fail to realise is that $1mill * 10 years
    LESS is much worse than $100k * 10 years loss by giving a commission.

    If someone makes you rich, share in the wealth. Otherwise they could make someone else rich.

    Taking 99% of all money and then having a 3% growth in your company is not smart, taking 85% of all money and then
    having a 20% growth is a better yield curve, but then again, I guess a lot of old school managers left school at age 14
    and have not a clue about compound growth.

    Seriously.... people leave for many reasons, they could be 58 and retiring and still put in 100% for the last 2 months.

    They could be leaving to another city but still will finish their work and document everything.

    People dont work in prison camps, they have the right to leave, same as CEOs they can resign and still
    put out their last 3 months at 100%.

    Often if the person was important, its good to keep them there to finish documenting everything they did or
    finish things off.

    Oh and btw, no one puts in 100% every week. Every CEO that plays 3hrs gold on friday, thats 5% off from a 60hr week.
    Not every human on earth is 100% healthy 52weeks/year none stop.

    what will you replace it with.... DVD or HDVD? insurance company pays... choose hd.

    I know they deny it, but denying it is the plan to SHOCK Sony!

    I bet they already are making 10000/week to fill the oil tankers!

    The group of companies behind HDDVD should be damn scared of the ps3, and they should be willing to pay MS $250m to get
    hddvd out there to compete. Im sure they can subsidise MS down to dvd prices and get it out there pronto together with
    the hdmi + 60gig HD.

    Seriously, how much can a HDDVD cost with the casing/cables and just bare bones internal.

    I said over a year ago MS will make an itunes style store to sell music/videos on xbox live and they have. If MS wastes millions on a crappy
    zune player, they cannot let hddvd just sit there not being 'standard' in the xbox.

    They are already in the black on making the xbox360s, they can either drop the price or increase features.

    This format war is BIG and long term... It might as well be the 'last format war' since theres no need for anything past this except tiny star trek crystals.

    Many games do 60fps easy, now a gui using 3d video card features, doesnt do much and it too can be fast.

    Whats slow is stupid code with lots of lots of wait states, and endless refresh for each tiny update.

    raw plain widgets are fast, but if you stard adding procedural generated textures with shadows and lighting, its gona slow down.

    Sometimes things are too fast that coders do not see their inefficiencies, it would be smart of them to slow down a gui app to 1/100th speed
    to see where the inefficiencies are in wasted redraws.

    1. ps3 wasnt ready 12 months early... if it was, then they would have had time to do a soft emu of the ps2 in combination with hardware acccel wrappers. Instead the ps2
    is there as 2 chips.

    2. The bluray drive is over costed, its really cheaper than it seams if you count raw manufacturing cost alone, and bound to drop real fast as they ramp up the factories.

    3. This is a long term venture, the ps3 will have a 2006 to 2015 life time. If bluray is not here now, its a missed boat because of hddvd competing. They need the numbers out there.
    which I think will force Toshiba to give MS a massive discount or even loss on making the hddvd drive for the next xbox360 revision as standard. If its only $50 more costs, toshiba will wear it otherwise its got no chance.

    4. japan apartments are tiny, they need a computer + game machine + media machine in one. Everyone hates 5 machines with 5 remotes. All it needs now are small usb-hdtv dongles to watch tv.

    5. it runs linux, and if Sony had the balls, they would open the GPU to be used under linux to kick in more sales.
