That's the P4-M. Intel says, quoting Tom's, the Pentium-M is "better." Obviously when a product comes out to replace an old one, most of the time it is, wait for it.... better. I fail to see what's funny about new hardware being better than old hardware?

Hopefully the data is encrypted? You'd think (and hope) that having a government contract would mean the company has some decent security. This much information can be abused in any number of ways, not just by terrorists. Perhaps this is an argument against having people's entire lives stored in a database.

  5. Supply and Demand on Microsoft Profit and Loss by Business Area · · Score: 0
Microsoft can be considered a monopoly, thus there is no supply curve. They control the demand curve by putting out products at different prices and in different quantities. Without a supply curve to regulate pricing, Microsoft is free to sell at whatever price they wish. So why don't they sell Windows and Office for $5000 each? The price isn't just some arbitrary number, it's based on a range of factors. And using price discrimination, they can sell to the biggest market and make the most profit.

The problem with a monopoly dominating areas of the market while losing money in them is that firms should not lose money in the long run. If MS didn't have so much revenue from Windows, it wouldn't be able to afford to compete in other areas. But since it does, it can; the BIG NAME can stay in the market and be unprofitable, eating up market share from possibly profitable firms. Firms can and often do have short run losses, so it'll be interesting to see how long they continue running losses.

Forget stick drawings of cartoon characters, for many years there have been groups formed around oldschool amiga ascii and newschool ascii which uses high characters. Sadly the scene has fallen off, but there are still active groups, most notably "Mimic", producing art. There's something far more entertaining looking at a 1000 line color ascii with perfect curves which took hours to create than there is viewing a few hundred automatically generated characters which if you squint looks like something you could just see in jpg anyways. Do yourself a favor and check some out...

ftp.mimic.ca features an archive of almost every ascii pack created, be sure to check out the mimic and remorse directories.

Thuglife.org has tools you'll need to view and draw (aciddraw) as well as web based access to the ascii archive. enjoy.
