So, tough luck for all those vision impaired people who want the information that's available on the web? Is closed-captioning for TVs a waste too? How about jury-rigging a building so people in wheelchairs can get around? I'm sure that's FAR more expensive than accessible websites. I don't think you can defend your position ethically.
"It won't last *forever*"
That was my point. We could argue about when we will have to switch to renewable energy, but I think we can agree that we *will* have to switch sooner or later. Most likely a combination of social and technological changes are what's going to solve the problem. I'm not very optimistic that it will happen without significant suffering along the way.
I have that exact phone and have been very happy with it. Here are the 3rd-party apps I use:
- Smart Database Viewer, because it doesn't come with Pocket Excel - Smartphonenotes - notes that synch with Outlook notes - Pocket DVD-Studio for ripping DVDs to smartphone-usable format. There's also Mobile Media Maker that's cheaper but has fewer options and can only do smartphone output, not Pocket PC. - gStart - Start menu replacement - Total Commander - file explorer with actual features (contrast with built-in one) - AlarmSet - just what it sounds like - Tasks+ - SplashID - for passwords - PHM Registry Editor - TCPMP as mentioned by others - WordNet CE - English dictionary - S-Tris Tetris clone - Games from www.absolutist.com - BTToggle to turn Bluetooth on and off. I haven't had much luck getting BT to work, but the utility works. - Mobipocket for eBooks - Jeyo Personalizer - setting home screens, etc, not all that useful but OK
All but the first three are free. Others I can think of that I've tried or looked at and didn't buy:
- City alarms - looks good but don't really *need* it and it's $10 I think - Torch - sounds good and works, except it doesn't override the screen timeout. So it ends up being pretty useless - CPTools - haven't had time to evaluate this one - PTab - another Excel substitute - Wordpad (I think that's what it's called) free notes/text editor but doesn't synch with PC - Rubber Stamped Data - backup utility. Works, but don't feel like paying for it
That's all I can think of/find right now. Have fun!

I agree that we need new (really not new, just improved) renewable energy sources. Therefore, I think we DO need to rely on "soon-to-be-invented" technological innovations to prevent the disaster. Or I hope they'll be invented soon, anyway. Our current technology clearly won't cut it, so we need either new technology or a non-technological solution, and the former would seem to offer less disruption of our society and have a better chance of working.
You don't really mean don't rely on technology I hope. That's utterly impossible. Everyone in the world relies on technology every day of their lives, and will continue to do so forever. So what are you really saying, don't rely on uranium? Or something else?
Is it true you have to show up to a polling station, but you can choose not to vote, because that's what I've heard. Sounds like an interesting idea, how popular is it?
What in the world is anti-capitalist about open source? Isn't capitalism all about free markets, where everyone can charge whatever they want for their products?
Not a bad idea, but then you would have companies spending enormous quantities of money on research and development, at least on paper. This would give them more free time to sell without competition. Some would get caught at this fraud and some would not, but it's something that would have to be dealt with under such a system.
You know the difference between phone service and a phone, right? In exchange for agreeing to pay for phone service every month for a certain duration, the carrier will buy a phone for you.
I can understand not caring about extra features. I know there are people whose jobs prohibit camera phones. But what is it that makes you guys actively detest phones that can do more than make phone calls? Is a phone that can play games more expensive than one that cannot? Is a phone with an MP3 player harder to dial than one without? What is it that turns you off to these things, rather than just having the phone in your pocket and ignoring all the features you don't need? Is it that you don't want to sign a service contract and therefore a new phone is expensive? Or is it something about the phone itself?
"I've had some terrible problems" "My experience with MS in handhelds is terrible." "Microsoft doesn't know how to downsize anything." "I have to reboot it about 10 times a day to get it to run fast." "I have no faith in Microsoft in terms of an iPod killer." "Worst. Thing. Ever."
"Demand ultimately backed by the force of the US Army.
I did not say the army would enforce a subpoena, I said their force backed it."
I don't understand the difference.
"I did not say the army would enforce a subpoena, I said their force backed it."
But it doesn't. The army's force might back the police in a case of a rampage, but it does not back up the police in the case of a subpoena. The army will not and does not have anything to do with a subpoena. I doubt I will respond any further since I'm basically repeating myself now, but I will read anything you post.
Then it's a different argument. You said that the gang (army) would take your lunch money (enforce the subpoena). But they won't. If all you're saying is that the gang (army) will beat you up (shoot you to death), then I'm not arguing with that.
OK, we can go with the bully analogy. The bully is the police. His gang is the army. The bully demands your lunch money and you refuse. Scenario 1, he tells his gang to beat you up. They refuse because you haven't done anything that has anything to do with them. Scenario 2, he beats you up and takes your lunch money. The gang does nothing. Scenario 3, you beat the bully into unconciousness and start beating down all the other bullies on the playground (but not the original bully's gang). The gang beats you up because you're taking out bullies and they don't like that. However, they don't care about your lunch money, and they leave it in your pocket as they walk away from your senseless body.
If you want to draw that analogy, that is how it would be most accurate.
"Why go for just 90% of the software market when with additional effort and degraded performance you can approach 100% without recompiling."
Or perhaps less effort and equivalent performance, depending on numerous factors.
OK, I'll bite. How did you read this /. thread?
How is a reader supposed to read the page when half the text is in the form of images with no alt attribute?

It's not my fault you don't understand my special relationship with Betsy.
Isn't there room for both models at the same time in the game market?

That does remotely in any way prove that we have clean air because of market forces.
Sorry about that...

You think the change is due to market forces? Such as what, exactly? I'd think it would be more closely related to the EPA.

So.... you're saying McCarthyism was appropriate, Constitutional, not a violation of civil rights? Or are you saying something else?

"The fact that a phone will make less profit for the phone companies should not make a difference as to whether it is sold here."
Why do you think companies should not take profit into account when making business decisions?
The other difference is that when you sign up for broadband, you don't get a free computer.
Dude, he's mostly slamming MS.
