  1. Density is nice, but I need speed! on Next Wave Of Hard Drive Tech: Perpendicular Recording · · Score: 5, Insightful

Storage density is one thing, but storage speed is another. With 200 GB hard drives readily available, and relatively cheap, the main thing I'm itching for is increased access and transfer speeds. Not just the controller speed as most hard drives still only maintain a constant transfer speed of 33Mbps. Theoretically, a denser drive at the same rotational speed will transfer data faster than a less dense drive, but will we see a dramatic improvement in sustained transfer speeds? While this transfer speed is acceptable while watching a DivX movie, it's really a pain while ripping a DivX movie. (A movie that I shot in my backyard, and authored, and own the rights to, and am ripping for the pure exitement as I would never violate a copyright.)

This means they have no desire to co-exist, but to supercede completely.
I concur. SCO obviously doesn't want to compete with Linux. They don't even want to peacefully coexist with Linux. They also know that Linux evangelicals have no desire to run proprietary code, that's exactly why they don't want to give Linux dev's the offending code so it can be rewritten. I'm getting a little tired of this whole situation, but that's exactly what SCO intends to do, drag these accusations out as long as they can possibly afford, and scare as many corporate users as possible. I don't exacty know exactly why they think that they can claim rights the Linux source whether or not it contains SysV code. Understanding SCO's actions is like trying to negotiate with terrorist. You just can't reason with the unreasonable.
  3. Missing the point? on Deep Linking Legal in Germany · · Score: 2, Insightful

Is it just me or are companies that discourage deep linking missing the whole point of the internet. Most web sites have severely limited and dumb search capabilities on their own or no search feature at all. Making me spend more than a minute searching on your website is just going to piss me off. The whole purpose of a website is for people to visit it and glean information from it. Preventing people from doing this is wasted capital. It's kinda like having 10 or 12 entrances to a shopping mall, but only allowing customers to use the main entrance.

I'm not one for strict government regulation of businesses, but if the rules are there everyone should have to play by them or not play ball anymore.

  5. Who can you trust? on A Critical Look at Trusted Computing · · Score: 1

A few months back I read an article that documented how Windows Media Player submitted information to a Microsoft server whenever a DVD was played. How will be able to detect or stop this once "trusted computing" is a reality? I don't trust anyone until they've earned it, and I certainly don't trust anyone that doesn't have my best interests at heart. Ronald Reagan once said, "Trust but verify." With Microsoft's "trusted computing" verification will be impossible.

Read all the documentation you received when you were hired, especially your employee handbook. A lot of times you can spot violations in offical corporate policy on the part of individual managers. Even if the policies don't relate to your current situation I would threaten to sue for violations of Policy X, unless they meet your demands. Even if Policy X has nothing to do with their current demands if it's a serious enough violation, management could cave.
