Hell, if this new format will get rid of the incompatibilities of Microsoft Works and Microsoft Office 95/97/2000/XP I am behind it. If the operating system can natively convert any MS Works or Office document to the new Metro format via wizard or context menu I will actually purchase a copy of Longhorn.
I am sick and tired of trying to give a poor explaination as to why a document; rtf, doc, wps, etc, will not open with the copy of the MS app they happen to be using because it was saved with the app on their previous system. I think MS actually designs in incompatiability.
claim the right to drive across your lawn! It's my right because I bought a truck that can do it!
Specious argument. By driving across my lawn you are infringing my personal property rights and probably destroying my property. You are trespassing which is criminally illegal.
The right I'm claiming is regardless of what the law says, as I am not infringining on another person's rights. I have the right to free speech, the right to bear arms, the right to refuse to quarter soldiers in my home, whether the law says so or not. The law / constitution doesn't grant rights, it limits government.
Notice I'm not claiming I have a right to redistribute. That, I believe, would infringe on the rights of the creator. But I am saying that for my own personal use I have the right to make copies, media transfers, no matter what copy protections I have to subvert.
While I understand I don't own a copyright. I do think that if I buy a cd/dvd/download that I should have the right to copy/play/replay the media for my own personal use. Unless of course I agreed in advance that my use would be limited (video rental, pay-per-view). If I want to make a copy of my cd/dvd/download and convert it to any format that I deem necessary to enjoy the content then that is my right! I am claiming it as my right. It doesn't really matter at all what any law says. You can take my ipod out of my cold dead hands because I bought the freaking CDs!!!
Oops, someone modded my post flamebait. I guess I should have qualified my remark by stating that I actually run Gentoo. I'm all in to that self deprecating humor stuff.
This is how my church does it. There is a tithe, that's the 10% you hear about a lot of Christians giving to the church. This money goes to the day to day operation, utility bills, pastor's salary. Then there's the building fund which covers future repairs, expansion, etc. Then there's the "Love Offering" which goes to world missions and the like. I said all that to say this. Debian, if the users so wish could hold different money in different accounts. If a user wanted to contribute to the operating fund, the infrastructure fund, or the benevolence/outreach fund, he/she could earmark it for those causes.
Lets get this straight. Lets say Consumer Reports did a review of 4 safes: Safe A and Safe B can be opened with a fingernail file, Safe C can be opened with a bobby pin. Safe D was inpenatrable with known methods, so buy that one.
Should Consumer Reports, their reporters, or editors be criminaly or finacially liable for posting the exploits? Should they contact the manufacturer and not inform the public? Should they be applauded and rewarded for offering the consumer a service? I'm sure your smart enough to figure out the answer there.
If my antivirus software or firewall isn't secure than I sure as hell want to know about it!!!
I hardly find this to be the case. A group of 10 or so testers for a Linux Live CD are currently using bittorrent for distribution. Instead of one of us having to host the ISO we all can. The torrent doesn't die until a new version comes out. Distribution would be nearly impossible, or unaffordable without bittorrent. I don't see how a single server - multiple peer model would be very efficient for our needs.
Most of the really good avi/mpg editors and filters for Windows are open source. Virtualdub as previously mentioned, but VirtualDubMod is the current version of the app. Avisynth is the perfect complement to Vdubmod, it acts as a frameserver giving you access to a plethera of filters. Both apps should have made it to the Open CD. There are howtos on both programs here and here. Both sites have PHPBB forums that offer support. Good luck, there is a pretty steep learning curve to AVISynth.
Free speech? You're almost correct in your statement, but the people in China have the right to free speech just like every human being. The problem is that the People's Republic of China being an unconcionable totalitarian state tramples on their basic human rights. Rights are not bestowed by the government, we're endowed with them by our Creator, sound familiar?. To correct your statement, I'm proud that I live in a country where my rights are trampled on less than most.
If I use Bittorrent and set my client to stop at a.9 to 1 ratio, meaning I have only shared 9/10ths of a movie file, am I still liable. I'll show you that an AVI file with only a bit flipped will be unplayable. How can I be held liable for sharing an unplayable file? With Bittorrent I'll only share a SMALL fraction a file with a single user. I bet you their high dollar lawyers can make me liable.
Funny how in English 101 they want you to reduce art to an explication, but if you reduce it to the numbers 1 and 0 and copy it you are a criminal.
I'm running 2.6 beta right now with the NVidia drivers. Make sure you're using media-video/nvidia-kernel-1.0.4496 as the latest drivers in portage don't work with 2.6.
X-plane and other flight simulators aren't the only victims of a cry for cry for knee-jerk legislation. The truth is society has never accepted brilliant science. We are were once witches and sorcerors, now we are geeks and terrorists. To keep this on topic, X-plane is real and yes, if we do find a "suspected terrorist" using X-plane in the course of a normal fbi/cia investigation, it should alarms go off in someones head, but to ban this game for everone? or dumb it down? Well that's just "plane" un-American.
Yes, I know its a terrible pun.
I filed mine, too. The FTC will only wake up and listen if enough of us file complaints. Remember they represent the people of The United States of America, not individuals, so if the FTC realizes that SCO is trying to extort money from a large number of Americans they will act.
I played pretty dumb when I filed my complaint. In short, "I've been using Linux for a long time, and now this other company, SCO says I owe them money because they own Linux and I don't know why, I didn't get my Linux from SCO"
I don't think the SEC would really care. They deal with internal corporate practices as they relate to the purchase and sale of stocks and bonds. I believe you meant the FTC Please see my post below (threaded view) for a direct link to their complaint form. I've already filed one.
Features like tabbed browsing and mouse gestures are now an itegral part of my browsing experience.
I agree totally. I'm so used to tabbed browsing and no popups that I can't abide IE 6 anymore. It's just lousy and boring. The only way Microsoft will survive is with OS integration (already covered that base) and more importantly, stealing popular ideas from open source browsers. But, hey that's M$'s modus operandi already.
Hey maybe this will turn them into lawsuit-bait for the RIAA. Urban cities sue the gun manufactures for marketing. States sue "big tobbacco" for health cost. Hillary Rosen should sue Western Digital and Seagate for making me fill my 140 GBs of hard drive space. Can't help myself... must... fill... drives...
The day someone prints my unauthorized biography, I'll know I made a footprint in the sands of time. I'll keep my mouth shut, grin, and light a cigar.
Unless of course the talk about my momma, sister, or daughter. I am from the South for Christ sake.

Mine was Gentoo 1.4, by the time I had it compiled it was 2004.3. Talk about a time warp.
Dude, that was so wrong. I'm going to go boil my eyes.

Maybe U.S. users should start taking the same action. Would the FTC listen?
