  1. I give my people stuff on America's Worst Christmas Parties · · Score: 1

I'm a QA director at a medium sized business messaging company (~2000 folks). Last year was my first year with the company and we all got a $25 amex gift card. And to add insult to injury, if you didn't use it in 3 months it expired. I buy some things (out of my own pocket) for my 9 staff -- usually some nice wine, gift baskets, and the like. I think its asinine to not give some sort of bonus for the staff. Anyway, Merry Christmas.

  2. My experience with Offshore CODE DEVELOPMENT on The Hidden Cost of Outsourcing · · Score: 1
Slightly OT, but has to be said.

I'm an ex-developer who has made the (sometimes questionable) transition to Software Quality Assurance management. I manage a team of 14 "QA Engineers" at a business services company. Code does not hit our production platforms with out getting past my team first :-)

The development organization at my company is slowly moving dev overseas - we have contracts with a two companies in India and one in Russia. The rest is done in house.

Now, when I see a new patch or package coming from the offshore teams, I automatically double my QA estimates. Why double? Because if I trebbled them I'd get waaay too much push-back from Upper Mgmt. And generally these packages run behind in QA, even at the inflated timeframes.

The code from overseas generates 400% more bug tickets than the onshore stuff (437% last release which completed end of January, in fact). And this is a java app ontop of jboss (its an electronic payment and presentment application for several banks, major cable company, rental car agency, and a few others). So its not the most complex beast out there. The onshore apps are generally much more complex (Solaris 9 and linux mix) and we don't offshore any of that work (yet - there's a push to do that).

I ramble... bottom line, offshoring development has only made my life worse, not better. And the money saved in dev costs is surpassed in increased QA cycles and dev fixes.

I just bought a home 10 miles from the ocan. I figure, in 30 years (when I retire) I'll be sitting on ocean front property!

    1. Buy land a few feet above sea level

    2. Steady the course, environomentally

    3. Sell ocean front real-estate in 30 years

    4. PROFIT!

  5. Re:Explain this language...! on Tech Support Levels Dropping · · Score: 1
In this case "[o]n a 10-point...", the [o] means that the letter "o" was not in the original quote. But for it to read properly, the editor replaced the "o" (it might have been an "a" for "an", or an "i" for "in" or something).

The changed or replaced letter is put in [] so that the reader knows that the quote was changed to make it more readable. Generally, this is only done if it has no effect on the underlying meaning of the quote, but only affects the readability of the quote.

You might also see it in this hypothetical case: Original quote - "The Americans, or at least the smart ones, are going to vote Bush out of office in November."

But the quote might be reproduced like this - "[They] are going to vote Bush out..."

That's not a perfect example, but it gets across the general usage of [xxx] in a quote.

Disclaimer: Asking a bunch of techie-geek-nerds (myself included) about the subtleties of grammar and language usage can be dangerous!

How does this DVD do in the Dolby Surround Sound area? Anyone using it in a high end home theater setup?
