  1. A semi-serious suggestion or two. on Online Gaming for Couples? · · Score: 1

My girlfriend and I have to live about 500 miles apart because of work. But, we both enjoy MUSHing, and have kept our relationship going with it, visits when we can, and regular talks on the phone. And MUSHes are, for the most part, free, and tend to encourage social gaming. I'd also suggest A Tale In The Desert, too.

  2. Yes, bulletproof. on Bullet-Proof Xbox Wows Police · · Score: 2, Insightful

Shock and expansion damage. Even if the bullet was stopped, there's a hell of a lot of force to get distributed. All bulletproof means is that it didn't penetrate.

Now, that said, that doesn't mean that they couldn't turn it back on...

My thoughts? The damn thing is made of kevlar.

  3. Who says it was? on Half Life 2 Source Code Leaked · · Score: 2, Informative

There's no reason it had to be. Let's start from what we know from Gabe's post. In fact, let's assume the Source wasn't even on Gabe's machine.

Starting with the exploits in his outlook, they get information on which server holds the code, how their server scheme works, maybe even some addresses if they get really lucky. The keystroke logging programs help even more, because it gives passwords to those servers.

Now, we have an internal network address or name, a password, probably usernames, and maybe even a directory to look in.

So, now we move to the hack of the webmail server. Maybe they used keylogs for that, too, maybe it had an open port. Regardless. Slip inside there, and use those tasty server cycles to help portscan or maybe even legitimately access into the Source box, which is almost certainly required to be accessible over the internal network, unless you really want all your coders hamstrung.

Then, you pull that source file and either make it part of an email, or an attachment. Webmail server pops it to an account you have legal or illegal access to and can strip the mail out of without being traced...and whalah! You've just used the magic of the internet to steal from a machine that isn't connected to the internet.

  4. Hrmm... on Will Smith as I, Robot · · Score: 1

Personally, I'm deeply hoping that perhaps they might use some of the elements of the Harlan Ellison screenplay/treatment, but I don't think we'll be that lucky.

  5. ATOC...argh. on Slashback: ClonesMAX, Animation, Dislaimers · · Score: 3, Insightful

So...as far as I can tell, this edition removed all the political intrique and vague sense of plot, poured in more closeups of scenes we already either liked or hated, and ruined all the somewhat fun explosions and action scenes by running things so fast acrost the screen you can't see them?

  6. Re:I want my MCP on Quiet Desk (Not Desktop) PC · · Score: 2

Very good, grasshopper. In fact, the whole MCP interface was kinda neato. Desk based machine, flexi-keyboard (and I assume some form of trackpad) built into the surface, monitor... Hrm....gotta wonder if anyone's looked at making one of -those- yet.

He mentions it, and the fact that most office toys really shouldn't cost $400-500....

  8. Re:Huh? on Dan Looks at Office Toys · · Score: 1
Consider it a case of workplace Darwinism. Nothing motivates the guys in the cubes like the knowledge that a dart barrage to the head will follow a missed deadline.

Even better, nothing makes the team go berserk if they can open up on the boss if they do -really- well.

  9. Nostalgia... on Dan Looks at Office Toys · · Score: 1
What surprised me about this was that I owned probably at least half of the toys when I was a kid, which gets longer and longer ago...

I still own the crossbow, the rubber band pistol, and a burp gun.For the record, the crossbow -does- sting like hell when shot with it. Not that some friends of mine and I used to go around in the woods with them or anything...
