  1. Re:Hey here's a semi-on-topic question on CDs May be Less Immortal than We Thought · · Score: 2, Informative

It's come up before here on /. and elsewhere...no medium has perfect longevity; optical, magneto-optical, magnetic, even paper all fade in time. The solution is to make a fresh copy at regular intervals with minimal handling of the master. The goal is to maximize the duration a copy will last, so that if it gets lost for a while, it can be reclaimed. This is what librarys are always doing with books. It just sucks that CD's were touted as some sort of immortal storage format, and now, probably as a result of cost cutting, some brands won't even last a couple of years.

Did they include drive time to the library? OK, maybe that's not the point of the article. But if it takes a few minutes to add some modifying keywords to the google search, fine with me. I'm not jogging down to the library to settle a pub bet.

Hmm..sorry, I thought the PDF referenced was this one, www.ansul.com/fireprotection/Products/ Inergen/F-2003128.pdf, originally referenced in the Fark story. There are more technical details on that discussion board than here on /.

This was on Fark already. Read the PDF. It's stored as a liquid in the tank, but its a cyclic fluorocarbon that vaporizes on release. This is simply the latest version of Halon (TM) fire extinguishers, not an "non-wetting water" or an "non-flammable organic with a water-like viscosity" At work we have carbon dioxide jets in the server room in case of fire. We've never had the building burn down so I don't know the merits of either method.

Hmmm...tasty flamebait. OK I bit. Perhaps we'd like the smooth vibrant grass not to grow in a "natural" area. Not a problem for yards and parks. But it would be for a wooded area where people (like myself) go hiking, to see plants that aren't store bought, carefully planted in straight rows, and meticulosly trimmed. It has always been a problem, for people who study plants in recently untouched area, like the Appalachian Trail, New Jersy Pine Barrens, etc. A common invasive species in many areas is Kentucky bluegrass, and thats not what it was originally. But hey, soon, after every last tree is cut and every last scrub is pulled out, your lawn will already be planted. Ready with a prime grass substrate for a practice putt range, some frisbie football, or a toddler swingset. The only real purpose for the outdoors anyway.

CERT made a big deal a while back about a new policy. They send an email to the manufacturer first, then sit on the info a month before they post to the general public, to give the manufacturer time to fix it before exploits flood users. That's why you heard about it elsewhere first. I've stopped browseing the CERT website, unless I need historical information. 'Tho it's the best place I've found for tips on how to disable exploits when a patch is not available.

Better still, my city sometimes has rolling blackouts in summertime. Consider, 100 houses in my city lose power. Doesn't even make the news. That could be an entire village in Sicily. Consider, some asshat overloads his local circit, burns down his house and the house next to his. Happened twice in my lifetime here in my state. Well, if you search wikipedia, ,http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farscape, you get a hint. Farscape, Lexx, Red Dwarf, Firefly, Blakes 7 are about misfits trying to eke out an existance in hostile situations. Star Trek, Star Wars, Babylon 5 are essentially about superhumans addressing the threat of the week. Either case you like it or you don't.

  13. Friends comparision faulty? on Simpsons Actors on Strike · · Score: 2, Interesting

Maybe we're missing something here. It has always been the case that voice actors are paid less then other actors. Except for non-speaking parts, or hand models, etc. I think this is enforced by the Screen Actors Guild. If Fox pays the Simpsons voice actors more, would they, and perhaps the entire industry, be forced to pay regular actors even more? Yeah, I'd rather watch a Simpsons rerun than a first run of Friends anyday. But I think factors beyond my interests have set pay scales.
