I think the problem I had was related to xinerama rather than the ctrl-g setting. I had no mouse control *at all*. I had to toggle fullscreen off (click Apply) then back on (and Apply again). Also, starting the game from an xterm on the head I don't want to play from starts the game properly on the other head.
Two tiny problems but...

the linux version works fine:) Had to make my GeForce2 pro my primary X screen instead of my TNT2 (PCI), and I have to toggle the fullscreen option off and back on again to get mouse control, but otherwise it works very nicely:)
