    Perhaps *in theory* you could create some system using metals, but in practice in the real world if there was any carbon around in the system than whatever kicks off "life" would be more likely to end up using that simply because of the flexibility it allows and metal based organisms would soon be outcompeted and go extinct. Also its curious to note that his system still requires water.

    Wasn't silicon the carbon alternative a few decades back? Whatever happened to the ideas of alternative life based on that (no, not electronics)?

    For the same reason that the FPU was first integrated into the 386DX. People forget that it used to be on a seperate chip (287). It would seem perverse to have a seperate chip for the FPU these days and I suspect in 5 or 10 years the same will be said for standalone GPUs.

    There are always going to be people around to buy a stock that has an intrinsic value as of itself - eg foodstuffs. More exotics? Well sucks to be you if there are no buyers then. Buy something more sensible next time.

    Really? I tend to find that managers in their 40s are the ones who stayed doing software for a long time until they got bored with it or just fancied an easier life. The ones who end up as PMs in their 20s don't usually stay in the industry - they tend to go and take their PM "skills" to other less technical arenas.

    Logic is easier to follow in C just looking at the code because there is no overloading or hidden conversations going on behind the scenes.

    I use code in classes because it saves having to write mystruct-> all the time which makes the code a bit neater, and the STL has its uses if you're in a hurry. But other than that...

    Maybe true 10 years ago, these days substitute C++ for Java where the coders have even less of a clue whats going on and just let the VM garbage collector sort out their mess for them.

    I don't know about the USA but here in the UK there simply are no C coding jobs any more except in very limited areas such as you describe. Probably single figure vacancies for the entire country. You should really learn C++ , its not that hard to get up to speed if you're good at C. Starting with C++ and moving to C seems to be a lot harder for people.

    Hey , there are still some of us around! :) I just have to put "++" on the end these days otherwise I'd never get hired! C++ might make writing programs easier but C is a damn sight easier to debug when things go wrong because everything is explicit.

    Especially since a lot of IT managers in their 20s are usually the ones who arn't so great at producing actual software so are slowly moving sideways into project management before they get found out and don't like being picked up on stupid technical decisions by someone old enough to be their dad. I speak from personal experience.

    Bollocks. Do you actually know any farmers? I do. Believe me, when they're dipping the sheep they don't really care if they can access iPlayer or not. The internet might be a nice-to-have where they can look up work related issues but it is no way an essential.

    No , it isn't. But you don't need the internet to use a tractor or sell your goods especially if you're already locked into a wholesaler/supermarket contract.

    Oh please. Turn off your hyperbole-o-matic. Most people in the country either work on the land or commute to an office in a town. In the former case the internet is hardly a major requirement for their daily existence and in the latter they'll probably have net access at work , in neither case is there a "crisis". Perhaps to you an obvious net addict like you it would be but we're not talking about you.

    I'm sorry , what? Schools have these things called "teachers" who teach the children and I think you'll find people in the country are very WELL educated because they have decent schools with teachers who can teach and don't just dump kids in front of a PC. Its in the inner city - where good broadband services are available - where you'll find a lot more of the idiotic and lazy kids.

    Because I assume the code as written could only handle one bullet at a time. I doubt they put in extra memory locations and support code for more "just in case someone hit select at power-up".

    Fairly simple. Given the poor resolution however I suspect its cropping. I would have expected better frankly. In space 6M miles really isn't very far.

    You're missing something obvious - most of the star has gone so its gravity will be a lot less. Perhaps the core would revert to near normal matter under these cirumstances?

    Neutron star matter in turn makes white dwarf matter look like a wispy puff of h2. It could easily pull apart a white dwarf.
