    In europe the age of consent is quite low, 13 in spain , 14 in france , 16 in the UK. So theoretically a man legally married in europe to a teenager could be be charged as a child molester in the USA if he slept with his wife on holiday there. Crazy system or what.

    You implied using it as a data format to pass down a wire. Who cares what the protocol is? Its still bloated and zipping it just slows everything down and at both ends not to mention adding complexity to both ends of the system.

    You're wasting your breath. Lego brick style programmers like him do the minimum of what they need to do and no more. They take no pride in their work nor do they care how well it works so long as they get away with it. They're the bain of the IT industry and the reason for a lot of the current issues with software unfortunately.

    Oh please. Its bad enough having this bloated standard in data files , but please don't start quadrupaling the amount of bits that need to be sent down a pipe to send the same amount of data just so it can be XML. XML is an extremely poor format to use for any kind of streamed data because you have to read a large chunk of it to find suitable boundaries to process. Not good for efficiency or code simplicity. And if you say "so what" to that then you've obviously never done real network coding where throughput is THE number one priority. I've written data links to stock exchanges and clustered systems amongst other things and believe me , speed is where its at. Anyone suggesting using XML would be laughed out of the building

    Do yourself a favour pal, go learn about network systems programming from the ground up - start with ethernet frames and work up from there to IP/TCP, sockets, memory mapped packets etc. Then you may just get a clue.

    This sort of crap has been going on a while now with every company trying to talk up the most trivial action into sounding something earth shattering or life changing. HOw many companies now just have a product? Not many , most have a "mission" or a "vision" in the hope that this juvenile over emphasis of everything will somehow fool people into thinking they're really some sort of spin off of the SAS or some high brow philosphical deep thinkers , rather than some shitty little cleaning services company or whatever. Everyone apart from marketing morons and some middle management still stuck in the early 90s is sick of it.

    Its not the price , its the principal. It shows the code is badly written and little if any though has been put into efficiency. Windows reminds me of a 1970s yank tank - huge engine , guzzles fuel , produces buggger all horse power and does 0-60 slower than a techtonic plate moves. Buy hey , fuel was cheap then so who cared for fucks sake? Well , some people did. - mainly the japanese and look what happened to the american car industry. The same thing will happen to MS if they're not careful.

    Haven't had a problem yet. Some flash stuff may judder a bit occasionally but thats about all.

    It can cope with all of that apart from the IM since I don't use one so can't comment. XMMS runs fine along with firefox & open office. Bear in mind people could do similar things with 256K on an amiga 20 years ago. Its only todays lousy programmers who can't program efficiently who have caused this problem.

    Its 9 year old machine. Still works fine. If I'd been a windows user I'd have had to chuck it when XP came out , never mind Vista.

    Windows has brow beaten you into thinking that you need crazy amounts of RAM for an OS when in fact thats just BS. I've got Linux happily running on a 128M machine and I don't think I've seen it thrash the drive yet even when using open office.

    Any OS that needs 1 Gig of RAM to run properly is a bloated , badly written POS which should never have escaped from the lab.

    yes I know , its a tongue in cheek article , but to be serious for a second - I personally have never come across a unix developer or admin or support person who didn't use the shell. If you really need to manhandle the OS beyond playing with a few desktop toys you have little alternative. So while no doubt shell (if you can call cmd.exe a shell) users in Windows are a dying breed, in Unix/Linux they're very much alive and well.

    Surely its written in C/C++? Or is it written in C# using a previous version of .NET? If thats the case doesn't that mean that the code manager is in turn being managed itself using the previous runtime? Or am I getting this completely wrong?

    Or maybe thay have a small TV. Try watching letterbox format on my 16in portable and see how long it takes to get eye strain. We're not half wits , we're just not rich kids who can afford the latest 40in HDTV.

    Theres more to torque than just the max amount. Its no use if it maxes at 10,000 rpm and is only a few hundred rpm wide. Car engines have a MUCH wider torque curve than almost all bike engines and they develop it lower down, especially diesels. Truck and bus engines take it even further.

    Sorry pal , even a road sports bike will have trouble doing 0-60 in 2.5 because they can't put the power down. Doing wheelies looks great but its no use in a drag race.

    An average bike does 0-60 in about 5 seconds. My camaro could do that and still hit 30mpg on a good day and it weighed 1600kg. How can a 160kg bike of the same performance only get less than twice the mpg? Sorry , something doesn't add up.

    A vehicle such as a bike that is that light with a cross sectional area that small should have far far better mpg than perhaps 50% more than a car weighing 10 times more and 4 or 5 times the frontal area (and hence air resistance). The fact that bikes don't says a lot about their inefficient (and torque-free) engines.

    They still have rubbish mpg. How can a vehicle that weighs only slighly more than a large man manage only about 40mpg?? Its farcical. If it did the same mpg per kilo as a car motorbikes should be hitting 300mpg easy.
