It would be better if they sent a message back to the sender stating the email account was suspended. Similar to an out of office reply.
That way the emails would still be available after the customer paid the bill and people sending the emails would know the recipient may not get the email.

Probably the same reason that people buy cars and add aftermarket accessories or upgrade their computer. Not everything you buy has all the features out of the box. Alot of people, myself included like to upgrade, update, add new features to things they buy.

The advantage is traffic. I'm sure the amount of traffic available on Ebay far surpasses any independent site and it will increase exposure to his site. In essence, if he can sell a cd on eBay and the buyer likes it, next time the buyer will go to the musician's site to get the next album and refer his friends etc.
