I own a Canon LIDE-50 scanner (2 years old, runs from USB power, fast and precise). It was bundled with a small utility and has 4 buttons on its front side.
I can assign realy basic actions to each button with the utility:
Scan and print
Scan and mail
Scan and launch OCR
Scan and save to disc
Scan and launch application
...
For your problem, you can:
scan and save to mounted SMB share
scan and launch simple BAT file uploading via FTP the file passed as parameter
The point of the global license is having ALL P2P legal: this is a once-for-all-free-lunch-all-you-can-eat ticket. Even non P2P distribution becomes legal.
If people can't help pirating, then let's sell them get-out-of-jail cards.
source code can be redistributed (under conditions)
For a company, the point in OpenSource is not its low price. The point is having a safe route: if the underlying company/community disappears or the software support is abandonned or the "must-have" feature is still lacking and not planned at all or early enough, the company can assume the dev/maintanability/evolution by itself.
So, from a company point of view (if redistribution is not needed/wanted), this is rather close to OpenSource.
For the Free vs Open definition, I'll rather say the other way around: all FreeSoftware is OpenSource but not all OpenSource is FreeSoftware. So, even if its not FreeSoftware, it could be OpenSource.
But I don't want to start a argument war here : this is just my understanding of the concept and not backed by any direct or indirect reference to existing licenses like GPL
Sources are available to commercial licence only... but it's available. Looks like OpenSource to me. Maybe they should not give non-commercial licenses ?
... on your "old" HDTV. Actually, TV manufacturer told you for ages that you really need that HDTV set because "in the future, you'll get HDTV content". But they just forgot that they don't own the content and that its owners will add a last layer of protection/technical requirement at the very last minute (2 years actually). This is like car manufacturer promoting LPG as tomorrow fuel... even if only few stations are making it available and that tomorrow fuel now looks like diesel and biodiesel and not LPG.
So, Id is having a 5 years dev cycle for new engines and a 1-2 year dev cycle for updates to this engine. We can not say that Id is being lazy by not releasing a new engine tomorrow: just way for the next cycle.
To me, CruiseControl _IS_ dangerous because it lowers your responsivness. CruiseControl purpose is to get a steady speed, to improve your mileage and smooth trafic.
Except for the GPS link, this alreay exist in many cars. Instead of having the cruise control engaged and your vigilance going down because you're resting your foot aside and have nearly no action on your car... and slooooowy.... are falling asleep. So, instead of having no action, you are still pressing the gas pedal, except that at a determined speed (set up like for CruiseControl), you feel the pedal just a little harder to press. So, inconsiously, you "step" on this limit and stay at the determined speed. But at an time, you can press harder or lighter to gain back full control of your car and speed.
This is no computer taking the control of you car, this is haptic interface.
Here in France, people are not used to CruiseControl and we recently had numerous trouble with unexperienced driver getting crazy about their car "having a mind of its own" when CruiseControl was integrated with many cars and not sold as an option. I think this system is far superior on the CruiseControl system because it keeps you alert all the time and is as effective as casual CruiseControl.
For the GPS speed system, it already exists in many GPS travelling sytem, with overspeeding warning. Connecting it to the speed limiting system is the natural following step.
The razor/blade business model set up by Gilette can be understood better by the recent example of inkjet printer. The manufacturer gives you/sells you at a low price what you think is valuable or was valuable in preceding business model. And it locks you into buying compatibles blades/inkjet cartridge/servers and makes all its margin from what you considerer are accessories. With inkjetq, you sometime can find deals were a brand new printer with 2 free cartridges is cheaper than twice the standalone cartridge. I have friends who bought a second printer because it was cheaper to do so:) ("Oh, all my Ferraris ashtrays are full. Let's buy a new one").
I never said it was a brilliant idea. Here, in France, we have a tax on CD-R (hello, lobby). The money is given to big majors. If we can not avoid this tax, let's use it in a way that don't favor established monopoly.
So the big majors can not invest in new talents ?
Let's tax the ISP and, instead of giving this tax money to the big majors, create a fund for artists:) So we'll invest in new talents.
I remind of a multituner recorder from Sony(?) posted here in/. able to record up to 7 channels at the sametime for up to 1 week of data per channel.

I forgot: use a PC-scanner linked to a MiniITX box.

I'll define OpenSource by 3 points:

My solution? Don't be an early adopter.
I'll beat you if you break my patent. Isn't it "physical" protection ?

When you're out of sources to DL a file on BT, just post the link on /. and you'll sure soon have half a million more people to DL from.
I wish I hadn't spent all my Mod points. I would have mod parent UP UP UP.
Funny ?! Mod parent interesting/relevant.

This tax does not ALLOW you to burn. It is just a way to get more money because they're producing crappy music and don't sell as much as before.

Those bugs are not ones that prevent games from running. Those bugs are bugs that prevent the anti-BootROM-tweak system to work.
