Havng been led to the truth about DeBeers years ago I was naturally apprehensive when it came time to consider what the plan would be for popping the question to my now wife.
However, I was in a very fortunate situation; a great grandmother had left a pair of diamond earrings to both my brother and myself. Since my ear-ware leans more towards surgical stainless steel (nyuk...nyuk) than precious stones it kind of made sense; have the stone in the earrling put it a setting for a ring.
Since the stone was fairly large it didn't look out of place. It was also a much older stone, well before DeBeers had ratcheted up their flagrant human rights abuses so I felt like I wasn't feeding into the industry. It also meant alot to my wife because it was a family heirloom; she got a diamond, but it was also symbolic of the rich family history she was becoming part of by saying "yes" as well (and she did say "yes"....almost before I had the chance to drop to the knee and everything)..
