Don't you think they should ask you for your agreement first? I mean, would you agree if anybody could publicly tell anything about you - without you knowing that, and whether it is true or false - without fear of retribution because "you can ask them to have the content removed"?

And what if you do not have internet?

Well, I use google news only after I have been reading slashdot, lesoir.be, lameuse.be, lemonde.fr... But, maybe I'm doing like that because I'm Belgian, after all :-)

I don't know where you were eating in Belgium, but clearly you missed something :-) Your ham, your cheese and your fries, they look like a fastfood menu. You will find any kind of food for a good price in Belgium, and there are many specialities in every region (not including those imported thanks to the numerous times we were occupied and thanks to the immigrants). Belgian cuisine is second to French cuisine only :-)

Actually Belgian people (these newspapers's relevant market) do not find these websites through Google, they know them by name, so I guess it would not change anything...

You are right: 60% speak Dutch, 39% speak French and 1% speak German. However, thanks to the good education system of the Dutch-speaking people, they almost all know French. You cannot tell the same of the French people, who almost do not know any other language. And about the German-speaking people, they almost all speak French as well.

Would the ruling have been published in Dutch, only half of the country could have read that.

    Sorry for my bad English.

Oh, and the text formatting is very discouraging.

I'll never tell it is better to sign up many subscriptions to remove ad than to use an ad blocker ;-) You are right, people pay enough monthly bills and having to pay for, often, low quality, and optional services would be baaad. In monthly bills you forgot : mobile, train, bus, crypted tv, ;-) Hope I will never have to pay a monthly subscription to drink milk, or to eat burgers ;-)

It also comes with virus blocking enabled by default and it does not make any problem because most people don't appreciate viruses.

    In the same way :

It comes with ad blocking enabled by default, and it does not make any problem, because most people don't appreciate ad.

Why do most people hate ad?
    - because many ad are popup ad?
    - because it eats bandwidth?
    - because it is shipped silently with many free products (Kazaa, ...)?
    - because users are asking themselve questions about privacy?
    - because some ad try to install some ad-software on the client computer?

I guess it's mainly because ad are often obstrusive : they open a new window, or they don't fit well in the page were they are (for example : 50% of the page), or because they were at first used a lot on x websites (espacially : pop-ups).

  11. Examples the way sms spam works in Belgium on US Cell Phone Users Discover SMS Spam · · Score: 2, Informative

I do not know about other countries, so maybe my post is useless. And my english is terrible ;-)

In Belgium, there are only a few main operators : Proximus, Mobistar and Base. Like that things are easy to control.

There are a few main pricing schemes : pre-paid cards and subscriptions. Pre-paid cards are more expensive per call and per sms but does not cost an extra monthly subscription - therefore they are ideal for very small customers.

And there are a few phone number types : normal and high-price. You can easily make the difference between them by how they start and by their length (length 11 are usually expensive). You could use a high-price number as a payment method, because when you own a high-price number you receive some money everytime somebody phones to you. Examples : chat, meetings, logos, secret codes to get something on Internet - instead of using a credit card payment system.

As far as I know, the receiver of a call or of a sms never pays for it if he / she is in Belgium. It is always the sender who should pay. But if the receiver is outside Belgium he will have to pay the international part of the call. It always makes me surprised when I hear it is not like that in other places (US, Russia, ...) : it would be a bit like you could receive bills from a shop for something another person bought.

Typical prices for call are between 10 and 50 cent / minute. Typical prices for sms are between 10 and 25 cent / sms. So if you want to send spam to the zillion of Belgian people it's going to cost you something ;-)

However something that happened a lot here was : people started to receive sms from a company, telling "someone thinks of you and wants a date with you : surf to www.com to discover who he/she is". They went to this website and they were told that a shy person is in love with them and wants to go out with them. If only you would discover his/her first name - because he/she is so shy and he/she does not want yo go out with you if you do not see who he/she is. Send your guesses to a high-price number. Obviously each time you would send a sms to this high-price number you would be answered : "nice try, but it is not the good answer - try again". Some people like me tried with every woman name they know ;-)

Obviously each time I tried a guess the company behind it received a few cents. They were hundred of people to try. And the most funny was nobody wanted to go out with them. At least, nobody told this company he/she wanted to go out with them...

    Do somebody knows other examples?
