i always enjoyed seeing those in my snort logs, or even the logs in my pix in later years. And yes, I'd send the sniffer trace to the abuse address of the isp, never made a damn bit of difference. This is what infuriates me about consumer isps. If one of my clients who buys service from me started to get sniffer trace emails to my abuse mailbox, i'd be on the phone at the least.
Want to put a stop to malware/botnets?
This is it.
If a simple email/phone call asking "are you using irc/running your own mail server?" gets a response of "I don't know what irc is!", shut them down until they can clean out their machines, hell, even give them help, such as redirecting them to an isp sponsored AV or something (and no, i'm not talking enforcing it like some schools do with clean access or other network admission control.) Doing this sensibly could very seriously take a bite of out a lot of the problems on the 'net today.
the covenant must be reasonable (e.g if a barber leaves a shop, with a covenant signed, it could be like he cant practice in the same town for the next year) but it cannot be of unreasonable time or of unreasonable geographic location... therefore, if western is in a diffrent area than seagate, he may be ok.
lets see, i live in a rural area and have to drive everywhere, some of my friends live over 40 miles away, gas is $2.00 a gallon, not to mention vehicular expenses..,
so dont consider me a poseur, when you dont know my life.
granted, im no microsoft lover, but im also kind of against punks like this guy... he has probably cost me almost $500 since this worm started in my PERSONAL services to my friends and family in order to get this all cleared up..
as for ms, they should be considered just as guilty, with such a large corporate juggernaught they have, they should be able to look for these vulnerabalities early, and maybe go through some more extensive testing.. or at the VERY LEAST spend a million or so and tell they public they messed up, and how to fix it... (run windows update) at least this way, you have a educated public... ignornance is NOT strength.
Ok, most schools (including mine) have 200+ computers on their network. the idea is for schoolwork, internet use is also allowed. But what has happened? EVERYTHING becomes censored. in one class your talking about free speech. the next everything becomes blocked or censored in the name of "security or Safety" this in my opinion is total B.S because people need to learn the diffrence between right and wrong. Maybe im a little offtopic right now but its true. there is no use for technology in primary education if its not doing three primary things.
1. Offering a wide variety of options (my school has no programming or CS courses, if your caught doing anything more advanced than opening Word or IE your silenced)
2. Showing people the proper use of technology (I.E demanding people learn how to protect themselves from threats over elctronic mediums)
3. Promoting Pure clean education, and by doing this i dont mean through "censorship" or something like that. if you learn things properly before you are at a keyboard. there is no need for censorship. however there is always a need for security.
Microsoft has some major security problems going on right now. and it is MICROSOFT who caused these problems, nobody else. i can see this every time i open my snort logs or do an iptables -L on my router (i have snort and pigmeat running for an ids plus a dynamic firewalling system) and in two days alone i get 3-5000 ips blocked and logged with SQL worm propagation attempts etc... (alot of welchia and blaster, not to mention code red) this is microsofts problem. they need to begin to think security and make security a top priority. All companies, not just m$ in general need to take up more on security and GET THE PUBLIC INVOLVED. maybe isps should demand some sort of scanning system to prevent this type of garbage!/rant
This is kind of difficult to explain, but im the only guy in my area (within 40 miles easily) that knows even how to use linux, or how to compile applications. However, i have quite a bit of windows expirence as well. my cell phone has rang off the hook for the last 2 weeks with people asking me to fix their computers from blaster... first i went to the girls' houses and fixed them, but after one too many doses of the spoiled little girl routine i decided to use VNC to fix this stuff (albiet difficult, not impossible) People do some bonehead things, and although my own personal system wasnt effected (Gentoo linux baby) all my friends were. oh, and by the way, im 16 and have a fairly tricked out gentoo box (quite a few custom wrote scripts etc...)
this could be great if people knew how to service them properly, in my own mind, watercooling is more effective than aircooling in many applications (cars, computers etc) but CARE must be exercised. What was once a hardware hacker's toy is now becoming mainstream, this is a VERY good thing.. .
Anything near this box now is highly secured, (after 15 calls to run to peoples houses and fix blaster, and then patch the box) i got like 3 f-prots running, spamassassin on all incoming mail, and tons of other stuff. My firewall is much more secure now, and everything...
I will NOT put up with this script kiddie garbage anymore... i just wish people would think security, i guess linux users think about it more than win users, because nix users dont get hit with a million popups... and most windows users ARENT wise enough to click NO or turn off activeX
-- All hail the penguin
I think after the movie they should use this type of processing power for something to help the benefit of society (e.g figure out cancer cures etc..) or to promote open source.. it would sure help.. Distrubted computing DOES work.
Think of this, we create a fast enough robot, we could use it for self- defense, who wants to get into a weapon fight with something that can remove the weapon from your hand in 500ms...
If someone wants to try that shit with me, come on in... if you can get past my security.. enjo the encryption etc... trying to stop other methods NO PROBLEM!
all i have to do is falcon@falcon $: sftp music@downloads1.se
You riaa jerks cant touch me.. and also, you cant stop usenet of TRUE p2p (like decentralized networks) and know what? i dont care about the dmca either, if im having a problem with that, sweden is wonderful this time of year!
DoS attacks etc.. well thats ILLEGAL, unless you riaa jerks have some in to get pardoned... theres no excuse for what you are doing, become reasonable about things (like let off on the piracy thing for once already) and start trying to help to get good music at reasonable prices on the shelves (8 bucks for a CD id spring for, if its GOOD) and the riaa also needs to stop lobbying the government so much, this just makes the riaa fascist
yeah, until gnome 1.4 came along, and 2.0 just put the nail in the KDE coffin, i prefer a UI with more power than pretty ui, and gnome gets the job done better than KDE ever will... konqui is crap compared to galeon and nautilus
According to legend and tall tales, the great gnome (the ones' footprint is in the gnome logo) comes to view his subjects, therefore, all the gnomes got ready for their grand king.. they even shaved their feet.
In other news, was this a prank or what?
wow... thats all i have to say, something like this could make waiting over a min or two to boot totally obselete... sort of like a "turn on" welcome to your OS of choise type of thing... i also tons of other possibilities such as high end graphics work and maybe even phasing out the disk as we know it 100%.... all solid state.. the possibilities are endless
From what I have been reading this stuff is just blatant garbage... The idea of locking out the user is a totally STUPID idea.. for one, it would kill the open source movement.. because behemoth companies such as microsoft would just lock out the competition (bye bye sun). the government would even back this lunacy because its the law. so even cracking it would be illegal under the fascist DMCA. so whats next?
Well, for us to combat this as a whole.. the first thing that would have to happen is all of us slashdot geeks get together and decide to actually vote and protest against this stuff and boycott against companines which support "you rent our equipment" and if the riaa gets in front of us, maybe we will need to strike them down... like with a chilling boycott (im talking tv ads to go with it) we can and we will win.
well, since the longhorn is immature, and us linux zealots are eating it and torturing it, i guess we can call it veal then.. YUMMY, NICE VEAL!!!!
Penguins like veal.. we hate microsoft, we hate longhorn, so we slaughter its young.
I miss this, espically with gnome 2x, 1.4 used to have a lovely applet where everything could be controlled centrally, and it had TONS Of features, i could control almost every aspect of the UI, this has changed in 2x, however, the start here and mac style control panels are getting better, i hope by gnome 2.4 we have the same functionality, if not WAY WAY more,... as for kde i dont like it, i feel KDE is a bit too bloated for me, Gnome seems much thinner, yet quite robust. Windows is simply a candy coated snail, and aqua is decent, yet, needs improvement.
I like this idea, music cdrs are cheap to begin with,a nd you know what? Id agree to that, id pay an extra 50 cents per cd to burn my mp3s, and the riaa can get off backs... this whole problem is now solved. See RIAA, i can be reasonable.
thats when i place my linux boot cd into the victim box and press the reset button on the case, mount the win partition and rm -rf / then reboot again.. Fsck microsoft, and fsck their drm garbage, ill just use the alternitive. m$ cant control the world, i wont let it.
THANK YOU!, your right, IIS is poorly developed software, Httpds and such need to be open source, else you CANT fix security bugs, etc... thats why i would never put IIS on my network...
I say that for a good reason too, if it was more secure, maybe, but hell, my apache is viturally bulletproof.
if someone would be nice enough to get me some game genie codes for a NES game known as SHIGEN THE RULER, i would be really happy (infinite money is nice) its a super tough rpg which i cant beat.... ive been trying for 7 years.

do they mean quiet as in 130db compared to so loud it can set your hair on fire? thats the thing im wondering...

im going to agree with you on that point... diveristy could be the next big fix...
