You left out an important part of the pitch:

Mac OS X Server, and eventually, Mac OS X, could do a lot for Apple, a lot for Linux, and really really hurt Microsoft. You want to run Linux non-gui stuff? No problem. You want to run what is widely considered the best gui as well? Go nuts.

In comparison, NT isn't as gui as the Mac, and isn't as non-gui as Linux. What's NT good for, anyway?

In a sense, we already have this, except we call it Usenet and fill it with porn.

I remember something from 1992, when I first got an internet account. I was reading a newsgroup where someone posted a question about how CD players work. It was answered by a Sony engineer who had worked on designing the original LD and CD players. His answer was extremely technical, about 3000 words long, and most of it was way over my head. I always remember that though, because reading that message made me realize that with the internet, the world would become a very different place. A place where the whole world could have open lines of communication with the ultimate authority on any subject.

Of course, Usenet is now mostly used for porn, and the vast majority of people on the internet just surf the web, looking at virtual flyers and virtual classified ads. Communication is not between university and students in newsgroups, but between pre-teens and other pre-teens in chat rooms.

But there's still hope! Maybe /.U?

It is true that Apple taxes FireWire, but it is also true that Intel taxes USB. The FUD starts to make sense when you know this fact. Intel would love FireWire to go away so that they could tax USB even more heavily.

Whether you love or hate Apple, the specs on FireWire are better, USB 2.0 is still vaporware, so why would anyone want FireWire to disappear? Even if it was inferior, why would anyone want reduced choices? Why would anyone want an even bigger Wintel monopoly? ...other than wintel companies?

"So, if you compare Apple to their closest commercial OS competitors (Microsoft and Be), they've made further steps than them. The problem with open source is for a company to not end up losing sales with movement to it, especially if they begin releasing the product for free."

Very true, but it is always important to remember that Apple makes its money selling hardware, not software. The first 6 system releases were free. It was only 8 years ago that Apple started charging for new versions of the OS, and the latest version is always included with a new Mac.

The software market could 'die' an open-source death tomorrow, and Apple would probably just sell even more boxes as a result. Microsoft, on the other hand...

OK, I admit it, I am only quoting this guy because he said that he was impotent. Tee hee.

Seriously, though, lost from this discussion is much mention of the crimes and punishments inflicted on dope dealers. Most people are fine with the fact that Marijuana does little to damage people's brains and bodies, but still are against it simply because it's legal. Moreover, the thought is often in the back of their minds that it causes crime.

Always remember that drugs do not cause crime--drug prohibition causes crime. If drugs were legal, whatever you think about the effects of drug use notwithstanding, then there would be less crime. Even if pot users had a slightly increased risk of cancer, teenage dealers would have a markedly decreased risk of shooting each other, or spending years in jail when they should be in school.

Oh yeah, not the white kids. They tend to get away with being users and dealers. Hmmm, maybe that's why a lot of people are in favour of drug prohibition. It is an excellent excuse to put 'those people' in jail.

A subtle mistake here, and one that many fundamentalists use to goad people into disbelieving evolution. Humans and chimps come from a common ancestor--humans don't come from chimps. That opens up two veins of attact for fundamentalists: Why are there still chimps, then? Are your ancestors chimps?

You have to figure out what some fucking idiot thinks is a continent. Arctica? The stock market is more like a place where people with money try to outguess other people's moves, however stupid, and beat them to it. Few of these people know what slashdot readers know about Linux, open source, etc.

Internet stocks are slumping right now, because that's the buzz that's going around the lemming herd of stock brokers. For now. Next month Tom Cruise will be wearing a red hat on Entertainment Tonight, and everyone will run out and buy rhat shares, or Bill Clinton will be overheard talking about open sores on his privates, and someone will think that he is holding open source stock in his private portfolio, and away we go!

You're smarter than average, right? You think that Red Hat is a good company, right? You think that open source software is where the future is heading, right? Put your money where your mouth is and buy shares in rhat, beos, etc., then hold onto them until you retire. I'm 29 years old, so the worst case scenario for me is retiring in 36 years. Just about every stock is going up sometime in the next 36 years, so I'm picking cool ones. What about you?
