  1. 2010 has come late on Russian Scientist Claims Signs of Life Spotted On Venus · · Score: 1

I would love to know how fast any of these objects were supposedly moving, but I know from experience it's difficult to get Russians to reveal that information. "HOW FAST?!"

  2. Oops. on Paper-Based Explosives Sensor Made Using an Inkjet · · Score: 1

I misread the title as 'Expletives sensor' and thought 'wow, are the three seashells next?'

  3. Competition we didn't need, on Apple Now Offering Free Recycling For PCs · · Score: 2

I work for a non-profit that recently set up a computer and e-waste recycling program. I'm actually pretty intimidated right now, because although I believe Apple will lose money on this deal, (unless a ton of people are actually dumb enough to trade a computer that would go for 500 bucks on ebay for a 50 dollar gift card) they may well keep it up as a PR balance to Foxconn, etc. So yes, I'm pretty much just whining, but I won't be the only one facing job-loss because a mega-corporation screwed up and now needs a public face-lift. I urge you to look for local e-recyclers, to evaluate their reputation, and use them instead if they pass scrutiny. Keep in mind that not everyone can afford to be certified by one of the formal programs (like the ISRI's http://www.certifiedelectronicsrecycler.com/ program) but that doesn't mean they're shipping e-waste overseas.

  4. Vinyl dye on Das Keyboard: Hit Any Key · · Score: 2, Informative

The autostore paint you're thinking of is generally called 'Vinyl Dye', or upholstery dye, and it works on many common plastics. (Experiment. It doesn't work on *all* of them.) It won't chip, flake, or even blob up while you're spraying. You can always paint over it with another color, but you won't be able to dye anything that's been painted previously. It's good stuff, and I prefer it to spray paint when altering the color of anything plastic. (Drive bay covers and drive faceplates, for instance.)

Actually there's a program running to introduce tigers in Africa. It's been fairly successful, from what I hear. Lions and tigers in Kenya, baby.

  6. Snow Crash on Port-A-Nuke · · Score: 1

Anyone remember the reactor attached to the gatling gun 'Reason' from Snow Crash? It had a cooling vane the folks immersed in the sea while they boated around. That's the first thing I thought of when I saw the post. A 'portable' source of power like that might lead to some pretty impressive weaponry in as small a package as a semi-truck. A semi-sized rail gun, for instance? Drive it up on a hill and accelerate a few boulders through an enemy encampment. Wear your earplugs.

  7. Re:wearable device on Port-A-Nuke · · Score: 1

Actually, I'm working on building a realistic proton-pack prop, and have been researching nuclear accelerators to see if I can add any nifty little details to worry knowledgable people when I walk around at conventions with the thing. I've been trying to find the correct forms from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for the construction and operation of a nuclear accelerator, but their site is just...obtuse!

  8. Rand McNally, lesser of two evils? on Best Online Mapping Site? · · Score: 1

I use randmcnallyatlas.com myself, having grown tired of Mapquest starting to screw things up after the first couple miles. But in fact, McNally does about the same thing occasionally. Not one of the map services I use is of any use once I get within a block of where I need to go, however. It's then I park, phone up my destination, and sob at them. :K) The mapping services do a great job with interstates and highways though; they've never given me cause to complain about that.
