ROFL! AMD is a big company just like Intel, and always was. If you think AMD's success started with x86 compatability you're dreaming. A linux analog? Well, maybe if Linux was produced by Oracle.
Feature competitive is more important - if you only want price competitive you can find any number of laptops cheaper. Is the "Powerbook" feature competitive? Not with that lame screen resolution it's not. IBM A21p - 1600x1200. Apple G4 "Powerbook" - 1162x786. 45% of the pixels, not even close.
The benchmarks given in the article bear out my own experience running Linux on a G4 @ 450MHz and an Athlon at 1.2GHz. The G4 is not even close. Apple has well and truly lost, their market is now people to whom image matters more than performance. I don't even know why they bother putting spin on the benchmarks.
It comes without a fan, but if you open it up you will see that the Mac cube has an 80mm fan mount inside. If you've installed a better hard drive that is also hotter than stock (like an IBM 75GXP) then adding that fan is a good idea. I had a couple of shutdowns that I could not attribute to anything other than heat before the fan, and none after. If you use a silent fan like a Panaflo L1A it will be quieter than the drive anyway.
Power Macintosh G4 2001
The G4's with Nvidia graphics are NOT Officially Supported with YDL 2.0. These machines contain new video hardware that is not yet supported by PowerPC Linux and will not work without addition end user configuration.
Neither are LCD monitors (you have to make some changes manually).
They won't use "You've got mail!". They'll play a digital sample of the secret police kicking down a front door. Urgent mail will be indicated by the sound of an AK-47 putting a bullet into the back of a shoplifter's head. Chinese people will be less startled by that.

To be fair to Qt, it should be noted that there is significant cost supporting multiple platforms - they need to get something back for their time. These guys are professional programmers devoting all their time to Qt, and the speed with which support is provided, releases are updated and new platforms (Mac) are supported reflects this. Sure it would be nice for this to be Free (or even just free) but there is no way it would be as good so soon.
I'm using Qt now, on multiple platforms, and find it excellent. A lot of thought has gone into this product, and a lot of effort goes into its support, maintenance and improvement.
It's a pity that they don't support the concept of genuine shareware - but I think it's a relic of the days of the BBS. Most "shareware" I see these days is simply crippleware (pay, or you can't save), or time-limited commercial demo.
Please think critically about this. Why? Because it costs Sony very little. Do they have to contribute anything at all to "Open Source" because of this? You might find an example, but it won't add up to much. And if the PS2 + a Linux expansion kit (or the $$$ development kit) seems more cost-effective than a basic Duron or Celeron system then you haven't looked too carefully.
Open Source is being cheerfully used by Sony towards its own demise.
You're just brainwashed by Jobs - PowerPC performance "at half the clockspeed" is a myth unless you're dealing with highly optimized and narrowly defined benchmark suites. Why not compare two Linux systems side by side? The G4 Mac you buy for $1500 is easily outclassed by the Athlon T-bird you get for the same money (and the Mac doesn't even include the monitor!). Compilation performance alone shows that the PowerPC is a dog. And as far as possible I'm comparing like systems - both using 512M of PC133 RAM, both using identical 7200 IBM 75GXP drives, same kernel revision, etc. etc., only the clock speeds are different - that Mac has been a big disappointment. People, if you're thinking of a used G4 just for Linux - make sure you get to test it before paying for it. I'm not saying that it's useless, just that there are more cost-effective options.
I believe it's a 15mm pitch (Thinkpad, Stowaway size is 19mm). I've used the Japanese model and it feels OK although a bit slower than the full-size model (except of course all the punctuation is rearranged on the Japanese model).
I've always heard from people running Linux on notebooks that power management isn't there, with the result that Windows 2000 gives you much better battery life. Is Crusoe tuned for Linux? Does Linux now have Power Management features? How can they claim increased battery life when switching to Linux?
OK, so what's the first thing you do when you hear there's going to be a shortage, or a big price rise in something you like? You go stock up. How many people thought immediately of buying a couple of 100-packs?
At pc-world.com, what do you see? Banner ads... from stores that sell CDRs. Funny, that.
No. In fact, the worse MS looks, the more people are likely to look at Open Source before it's ready. And you know what happens then? People either laugh or scream, and run right back to Microsoft vowing never to touch that free shit again.
Star Office and all the other alternatives MUST become better than the MS product, and not just a little bit - obviously better. The cost doesn't really factor into the decision at the corporate level. If and when people flirt with change the change must be compelling, or else that brief look does more damage than good.
And with the dot com crash, how safe is an ASP? Maybe it doesn't make sense to base your business on a service when you're not sure if it will be around next month.
Schadenfreude - it's what you feel when you're working with someone on a project, and you are able to prove it's their bug that is causing the problem. I think of it as "evil joy".

The thing is, Australian humor has a strong element of satire. Americans usually just don't get it because Amerian humor is not so strongly satirical and self-deprecating. "Crocodile Dundee" is an example of this - plenty of action, plenty of slapstick.
Hollywood produces film that appeals to the lowest common denominator, the slack-jawed yokel in 'bama who needs a minute or so to get the joke. (This is also why each 30 minute Star Trek episode contains around 12 minutes worth of plot, and why Shatner's atrocious overacting was so successful!)
By and large, (and with notable exceptions like "Babe", Australian film isn't aimed at morons. It's made with a global view, but we don't always get it right. Any others? I bought the US DVD but still want the Australian version. I hate dubbed anything (although the version of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon showing on United Airlines was done remarkably well)
"Any available charger" - Nah. Go see Maxim for cheap silicon that controls the charge curve and shuts off the current when the battery is charged. These cost about $1. If you crack open your laptop or laptop charger, you'll find one there.
For all practical purposes, NiCd "memory effect" is a myth. Unless you're into RC car racing and can only afford the kind of charger that only has a timer.
