  1. IE will be King...unfortunately on Browser Wars II: The Saga Continues · · Score: 1

As long as Windows is the dominant OS on x86 and the 64-bit variants thereof, IE will be the most used browser because, as a couple people have said, most people either don't care, or don't want to learn anything new. The biggest challenge I face as an IT person is teaching people new software, especially when they don't think there is anything wrong with the old app(which has made migration to OS X difficult in the labs that use Macs). How many people do you know still use Win 98, or even 95, because they are comfortable with it?

Speaking of Macs, I don't think Safari is quite ready to be the end all, be all Mac browser(though it is my primary browser). There are too many ecommerce, and other, sites that, unfortunately, depend on IE's flawed implementations to work correctly. IE will be on my machine, though not in my Dock, for quite some time until Apple gets everything working with these websites.

Is it just me, or is it a bad idea to name an OS update after Smeagol? He killed his brother, took the Ring(which corrupted him), lost the Ring, finds the boys and leads them to be eaten. Failing that, in his jubilation after biting off Frodo's finger, accidentally kills himself and destroys everything immediately around him. This sounds more like a Windows update to me.

Maybe Samwise would have been more appropriate? Actually, why name it after LoTR characters at all considering everything was rendered on Dells? I would say name it after Nemo, but that movie was rendered on Intel processors too. Too bad the CEO of Pixar doesn't know anyone at Apple.

  3. Not a good trend on Adobe Drops Mac Support For Premiere · · Score: 1

First of all, I'm not going to miss Premiere. Having used both FCP and Premiere, I prefer FCP.

However, I'm beginning to see the trend swing around where Apple apps. "should" be compatible with MS/Windows apps, but something isn't quite right. I'm sure everyone had problems going from Appleworks to Word/Excel for Windows. There are still problems with PowerPoint formatting, Word templates, and other annoyances(using Office v.X). I will probably have to have IE available on my Macs for quite a while so I can use some web sites(though Safari is getting much better...but still submitting bug reports).

Apple, if they are going to keep going in this direction, will have to be sure they keep as compatible with M$ products as possible. Marketshare isn't going to grow if there are more apps available, but a Office document can't be used on a PC.

*note: I don't like M$ as much as any Mac user, however the reality is MS/Office pretty much makes the world go round

  4. G3 won't be around long on PowerPC 750GX Begins Sampling Next Month · · Score: 4, Informative

With Apple's announcing that beige G3s won't be supported for Panther, that's probably an indication of Apple moving away from the six year old processor.

As for Apple not using the same processor in pro v. consumer notebooks, the same was true in Power Macs and iMacs until the iMac G4(and then eMac). There will probably be a short time in which Apple will put the G4 into an iBook replacement to co-exist with the Powerbooks.

My guess is they will put a new name on the 12" AlBook and maybe even a "new" 14" version. The 17" with a better processor(MPC7457 G4)/motherboard(DDR333 RAM) combo will be the main selling feature until they can get heat to a manageable level on the G5.

One thing no one has seemed to notice is Veritest did their benchmarking on machines running RedHat9. The SPEC benchmarks he quotes were run on machines running Win XP(with HyperThreading enabled).

Another interesting note: the dual PowerPC 970(according to the Veritest bench) beats a dual Athlon MP2400 system(AMD bench).

  6. It's not that they don't already have Macs on School May Turn Down $43K In Free Macs · · Score: 5, Insightful

According to the article, there are already Macs in the school's library and graphics classrooms. Also, teachers can have Macs on their desk. This school is part of a re-organization to have three academies geared toward student interests. Expand their minds, while making them use one OS? Sure.

This gets back to a number of old (mostly bad and uninformed) arguments. Total cost of ownership, applicability of OS in the "real world", etc. I'm sure that all of the IT staff have MCSE certifications, and with that, the attitude that "Macs suck". Which was why the policy was created in the first place.

The reality is money is not getting spent on education. If it is to be believed(and I doubt it), the Gates Foundation grant doesn't specify what kind of computers are required. I applaud anyone, whether I agree with how they run their business or not, that donates large sums of money or computers to schools.

Schools shouldn't be stupid and turn away new computers, even because of some short-sighted IT proposal.

  7. What else is in the filing cabinet. on Latest SCO News · · Score: 1

"A SCO paralegal found the amendment Thursday in a filing cabinet, Stowell said. It's titled "Amendment No. 2"; Amendment No. 1 is "completely immaterial" to the issue of copyrights and trademarks, said Stowell, who said he believes there are no other amendments."

Is it just me, or is it odd that this very important piece of a major purchase contract was "found in a filing cabinet"? It seems that SCO seems to be pulling things from who knows where. It's true that any press is good press for a company like SCO, and they are keeping their name in the headlines.

I wonder what else is in that filing cabinet. Map of Atlantis? Pandora's Box? Jimmy Hoffa? Pictures of who really shot JFK? The holy grail?

The problem is, he sat in his office and came up with all of these wacked security ideas that he never checked with anyone in the administration to make sure it wasn't political suicide. He even wanted to suspend habeas corpus(look that one up on your own) for the first time since the Civil War(all of this is a summary of an article in Newsweek a couple weeks ago). Remember, this guy is Attorney General because he lost the Missouri U.S. Senate race to a man who died a month before the election. Two, in California, there has been a ruling that if you use your credit card to gamble online, not only has the credit card company broken the law, but you can sue them because they "gave" you a method to break the law(not to mention you don't have to pay that part of your credit card bill). So, kill all the lawyers. People need to learn to be responsible for their own actions. It's not PayPal's or your credit card company's responsibilty to make sure you don't break the law.
