  1. Re:He's missing a point about Linux... on Is It Wrong to Love Microsoft? · · Score: 2, Insightful

It's true that Linux offers almost unlimited customization, but that is also it's down fall. 90% of computer users want something that works out of the box, not something that takes a day or two for someone somewhat computer litterate to setup. I'm not trying to bash Linux, and I have a couple hobby boxes of my own, but I just don't see it ever taking of as a general desktop OS. I would have to quit my job and support family members full time if Linux were the main OS right now. :(

With today's modern PC's, it's not too far out there. I think one of point the author was trying to make was that with requirements like that, you lose one of the advantages of a Linux based system. You can no longer claim (using the big 3 distro's) it's faster. Sure you could use Xfce or a similar streamlined window manager to get some of the speed back, but if you want same polished look and feel (IMHO), and really want to sell Linux on the desktop and workstation, you're going to have to make that performance/visual usability sacrafice.

I definitely agree with L7 here. I have a friend who got a masters in Nuclear Physics, but is now running a home business reselling Big IP F5 boxes. With the problem solving skills you learn in mathematics, you should be able to handle most anything a technical field like Network Engineering can throw at you. Just work on a couple certifications after college and you'll be golden. FF

  4. ClearQuest by Rational... er IBM. on How Do You Manage Requests in Your Organization? · · Score: 1

Depending on your resources, the semiconductor company I work for uses Ration ClearQuest. It provides management, reporting, assigning, tracking, etc. for 3 case types: Bugs, Enhancements, and Work Requests.

I've been using for about a year now and from what I've seen, and it gets the job done pretty well.

Take a look at rational.com if it sounds interesting.
